A few years ago they improved upon hole cam technology. So they can broadcast the shows while showing viewers what cards the players are holding. This makes it more interesting.

Also about five years ago the World Poker Tour started. They used fancy lights, exotic locations, and lots of money to make it interesting. People became interested in these amazing players and lots of money at stake.

In 2003 an accountant from Tennessee, an amateur online player, Chris Moneymaker (real name), won a seat at the $10,000 World Series of Poker by winning a $40 online competition. He turned his $40 into a WSOP seat, and won the Main Event for a prize of $2.5m. His unlikely win fueled the fire among amateur players, who also now had the option of playing online, which has really only been around for the last six or seven years or so.

All of these factors seemed to conspire to produce quite an interest in poker. In fact many call it the Moneymaker affect after the man who inspired so many players to take up the game.

1. Some guy from Tennessee (Chris Moneymaker) won the World Series of Poker. People looked at him and said "If he can win, anybody can."

2. At about the same time, the WPT started broadcasting tournaments where they showed the cards that each player was holding. This made it more interesting to watch, so more people became interested in poker.

3. At about the same time, poker rooms started springing up on-line. People could play poker for tiny amounts of money (even for free!) without leaving their homes.

Two things mainly. First, the tiny camera's that let you see the hole cards on telivised poker has added excitement to a game that used to be boring to watch as a spectator. Second, major poker tournaments used to one exclusively by big names like Doyle Brunson and Phil Helmuth but in the last few years previously unknown amatures have been winning big money and big titles. So many people believe that if Chris Moneymaker can do so can they!

TV & tourney games but one thing people do not talk about is that poker changed from draw and 7 stud to hold-em so the casinos could deal more hands per hour (for more rake) and put more people at the table as hold-em uses less cards. for the casinos profit per square foot is the most important thing.

They added those little cameras to see the hole cards. That makes poker so much more marketable and entertaining to watch. Now the ameteurs can get into the heads of the pros and see why they make certain plays.
