I have a old PC with XP Pro that wont update,XP has a invalid .......?

the pc has a invalid key and the system is cropupt , can i down load another OS like Linix or something insted of using
windows and having to buy something from MS. all that the PC is used for is surfing the web and playing games?? any info will be helpful, thanks
