I'm a Christian, and that's EXACTLY how I feel. Thanks for posting that quote.

People (fundamentalists) are so concerned with making God fit into *THEIR* interpretation of scripture. While The Bible might be a good starting point, I think there is much more to God and the spiritual world than could ever be condensed into one text.

The quote is actually more insidious than what most of the posts give it credit.

You might take it as look beyond the bible to the inspiration god is currently trying to give you.

Or, the insidious part, you might take into account the very infinite nature of a truly all-knowing and all-powerful being would have no use for a book like the bible at all. And anything a finite being could think of would be bested by such an infinite being.

This kind of god would be better to the point of perfection in every conceivable way... which would require no energy at all. And, in that way, the quote implies, there wouldn't be a book or anything else.

It's my personal belief that the Bible is a fantastic glance into the will of God for mankind. It serves, in part, as a guide in how we are to treat each other and that basic beliefs that we should hold true.

It also serves as an historical record of families, cities and occurances that lived long ago.

There are those who claim "the Bible is the inerrant Word of God.". I grew up believing this.

No disrespect intended here, but I personally would attribute that to Jesus (the Word of God) but not necessarily the Bible . It has been proven time and time again that the current interpretations have departed many times from the original Greek and Hebrew.

The Bible in it's many current forms has been (and continues to be) interpreted and reinterpreted so many times by so many peoples. There are books that exist that were not included in the current version, and books that some still argue should not have been included. If nothing else, this alone points to our imperfection and need for something bigger than ourselves.

Can one really include the entire written will of God for man in one book? Are we really so naive that we think we can contain God in a box (or book, in this case)?

The bottom line for me is that the Bible serves as a guide to an absolute Truth Who came in the form of a man. The arguments on whether it's 100% accurate or less will continue until He returns, and that's ok. Until then we're called to continue reading, thinking about what we read, studying to show ourselves approved, understanding that we will make mistakes along the way, following it's basic commands to love and serve, and living as we are called to live.

My 2 cents.

Im a follower of Christ

God is everywhere and can not be contained. He is outside of the dimension and we cant begin to comprehend what it would be like to see him face to face.

I believe that even to this day He inspires His children, but instead of writing another book He inspires them to go out and physically speak to people. Every second someone around the world is being told the good news about the gospel yet it is not that person who is speaking but God speaking through them. God can use anything to witness to others, even stones. Luke 19:40 "I tell you that if there would keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out."

Could all there was to tell about God fit in one book? no way! All the acts that Jesus did throughout His life couldnt even fit. John 21:25 "And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written."

Do i think i have come to the end of His power when i have turned the last page of my Bible? nope, His power is endless. I see His power every single day. He shows me things that make me take a step back and think about how awesome He is.

Great questions.

Blessings upon you my friend.

I'm an atheist and do find it peculiar that this so called God would send his son to Earth to teach his subjects and then give them no further input in the intervening 2000 years.

Christians are often talking about the second coming of Christ, but what sort of "loving father" would keep his "children" waiting for so long ?

As the Bible was written such a long time ago and doesn't really relate in terms of the language it uses to the people of today, you'd thing he'd come up with a new, updated edition wouldn't you.

<= Agnostic

The Bible was assembled by people, not God, but if God had written the book him / her / itself. I'd guess the reason for its limited breadth wouldn't be that there was no further inspiration, but maybe a desire to not overwhelm its children with scripture.

Even that is sketchy. Isn't a book not something Godly, but rather a tool we humans have developed of our own devices to aid our education? Somehow I don't think something as powerful as a God would keep books around its home.

Evolution is not controversial. There are no scientific arguments against it. There are some religious people who try to sound scientific by twisting logic and misrepresenting the facts. Evolution was a done deal even without the overwhelming genetic data. The fossil evidence is clear proof that animals have changed over time and apparently evolved and radiated from earlier forms. The genetic data, particularly in the D-loop of the mitochondrial DNA, is unbiased mathematical proof that different species share common ancestors. It completely negates all arguments to the contrary unless you resort to the silly notion that the evidence was put there to test your faith.

I don't believe the Bible contains God, but it contains His thoughts.

God continues to inspire through His creative works. He also spoke to some of His servants and gave others dreams. When it comes to the Bible, I believe He gave us what we need.

2 Timothy 3:16 says: "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness." Verse 17 goes on to say that this is so the man of God "may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work."

God's power is also manifest outside the pages of the Bible and, according to the Bible, he will shortly display more of his power. Isaiah 40:26 says that God has an "abundance of dynamic energy" and that he is "vigorous in power."

I think that with a finite number of words you can express only a finite number of 'things'.
but only if sentences in that language have a limited number of meanings. since that is not the case with the language used in the bible the number of 'things' written there is uncountable.
so no when the last page is read, you have not come to an end. ( atheist )

My interpretation of the quote is that God cannot be limited by space or time to the text that we know as the Holy Bible.
