why is it that the discussions on here are so heated??? i don't understand why people can't discuss their point of view without offending someone or without blessing somebody out...i mean i have very strong opinions that are completely out of a Christian perspective, but i would never try to force my opinions on someone else...i don't feel that is very effective for anybody...whether you're a Christian that's trying to make an atheist understand or you're an atheist trying to make a Christian see your view, forcefully speaking is not the way to get a point across...i've seen it happen so many times and people just get aggravated when you have your hot-headed opinions. i want to know what everyone thinks about this subject...don't hold back, but also try to keep your comments civil....

People tend to be nasty to people who don't see things as they do...that's how the world generally is...I would like to say this to all the christians out there...when telling people about Jesus...don't threaten them with hell...it isn't proper...plus the bible says 'do not judge'..if you go about saying things this to people's faces it could come off as offensive...I think to really get people to understand the word of God...you should show love to them...that goes a long way...because God is love and is happy when we show love...whatsmore...being obnoxious and rude doesn't pass a point across...infact it just shows that you're limited when it comes to reasoning..
Good question I might add....

~peace!~

First of all there is no discussion here. This is a Question and answer forum. Each person gets only one chance to make their point. There is no give and take, as when having an actual conversation. That is why this type of forum seems needlessly blunt and abrupt to you. Social graces count for nothing when dealing with anonymous strangers. The point here is to say what you mean as clearly and unambiguously as possible.

Second, I do not understand why using precise language and presenting my views forthrightly is considered offensive. I am entitled to express my opinion. If you don't agree, that's your privilege. Claiming my behavior is offensive, just because I express an opinion you don't agree with, goes too far. If you are offended by people who prefer to state their own opinion, rather than kiss your tender behind, you are definitely in the wrong place!

I believe discussions on here are so heated because the fact that it is the internet, and you can say practically anything and get away with it while at the same time remaining basically anonymous. Not to mention you'll have one rowdy person that says something, which just opens up a gateway for others to follow without worry. If these questions were asked in real life almost all of these people wouldn't have the backbone to stand up for what they say on here in the same manner. All in all... it's the internet and that's just how things are.

Well, the notion of faith and believing in something (or for atheist, believing that something is not) is a very personal thing. It differs from person to person and is something each holds dear.

With that as a given, it's not hard to see people becoming passionate or even heated at their online conversations.

It's even plausible that many of the insults and rantings comes from heated arguments outside of Yahoo! Answers.

It can be a really enlightening place, but yes, there are people that may ruin it for everyone. I myself will apologize in advance for causing hatred among fellow people.

Please do not be discouraged. There is a lot you can learn from here. If not about religion, then about how people are.

well we're told by God to spread the word. Atheists tell us we're offending them and their beliefs, then try to degrade ours. I know not all Christians are the friendliest of people, and emails threatening atheists with hell is uncalled for. I wish we could all be friends with no one trying to hurt anyone else's feelings. I see exponentially more degrading and offensive answers from atheists than from Christians. Probably why most steer clear of YA. I sometimes this I need to, as well.

They are going to be heated because for most people, religion is not an objective, logical issue - it is an emotional, maybe even a bit irrational issue to which people are deeply tied to.

You start telling them their beliefs are wrong, or that yours are different and just as valid, it get people very emotionally upset.

Jackie,

I think that people get used to hiding behind a computer screen, and they use their anonymity as an excuse to be rude and belligerent, call each other nasty names, and be grossly judgemental and hateful. People like that are wimps in real life, and they use this forum to vent their frustrations on people who can't reach through the computer and treat them the way they'd be treated if they were together in public. It's cowardice.

It's the nature of the topic.

Anyone who stays calm, civil, and entirely factual from his POV is likely to get various groups of others riled up by being interpreted as denying or even mocking their respective truths.

Because
1) Religion is a touchy subject, and
2) On-line forums are easily prone to flame wars in the first place.

So why are you so surprised?

well then you're not one of those people, so why do you worry about it? by the way, couldn't help but notice you said christians tried to make people "understand" and atheists tried to make people "see their view". as if christians were right. as if you somehow knew the right answer. nice.
