its all in the eyes...if the cats eyes are squinted then they are happy...if the cats ears are steight forward and they have half closed eyes they are happy...if the cat is purring but the pupils look really big and or the ear are back they are hurting. when you have a kitty and you bond you will know what your cat is feeling

well.... a good sign would be if it's biting your arm to the blood and scratching away at your arms all the while purring...that would be the bad purr. (or maybe just a psycho kitty)

my cousin had this happen to her...
but usually if they're upset they'll be flipping their tails around and they get a different look in their eyes. they'll be more on edge.

you can pretty much tell the difference by the attitude they have at the time of the purr. the more you know your cat, the easier it'll be to tell when their attitude changes.

It is all in the body language.

Happy Purr- Relaxed ears, Heavy looking eyes
Nervous Purr- Ears shifting listening intently, pupils dilated and not blinking.

This is pretty much common sense. If you're petting the cat and all is calm and right in the world, the cat is happy. If kitty's tail is lashing around and he looks miffed or otherwise disturbed, he's in pain or upset.

Cat's actions and body language should tell you. Tail up, cat rubbing against things, paws kneading are signs of a happy cat.

A happy cat will knead. A stressed cat will also cry out, lash tail, and look really unhappy.

You can tell if the kitty smiles and rubs against your legs. If it cuddles with you then I wants to relax because it's had a hard day. :)
