Rent the movie Code 46. Not only is it a good movie, I think it is also the best indicator of near future, post GW society (other than the "viral enhancements", I think that is still sci fi). I hope genetic manipulation will not ever be accepted, but population control by genetic indicators (Eugenics) may be widely accepted in the future. If Hitler had won it would be now. I would rather see Sexual Responsibility taught in schools rather than Sex Education, hopefully a voluntary system would replace Eugenics.

As for a sustainable future, the only way is to nurture ecosystems, not destroy them. My vision of a SUSTAINABLE future is similar to Code 46, but outside the cities is a lush, natural, diverse environment, not endless desert, and people require passes to get out of the city, not into it.

Also, science will follow the principles of permaculture and biomimicry; incorporating nature into our living space, but not as raw materials, as a living part of our environment, as intended. I.e. living HVAC and water purification systems. A good recent example is Biological LED TVs. They use basically an engineered material similar to fireflies to create the light, rather than a picture tube or projector lamp. Sony and Hitachi (?) are both coming out with models.

We can't stop the effects of Global Warming, but we can prepare for the worse. Building Codes will change; wood frame construction will be a thing of the past, houses will not be permitted to be built on flood plains or other high risk areas (which will likely be made Law through pressure from insurance companies).

There will be a new profession: Environmental Nutritionist. Their responsibility will be to maintain a positive life balance in the ecosystem, in other words they will monitor all food webs and nutrition cycles to ensure that we give back more than we take out.

That is just a few "prophecies" for the future I hope will happen. It is the one I will work toward.
