Define defeat.
If there is no progress in Iraq, it will be because the Iraqi people don't rise to the occasion and form a functional government, take control of their streets and stop the violence.
We can't do it for them, they must take responsibility for their own destiny.
So if there is no progress and we are still fighting people allowed to hide in their neighborhoods and move about the country unreported... it isn't defeat, it's a damn shame!
g-day!

We did win. Saddam is gone. The Iraqi people FREELY voted for their own Constitution and FREELY voted for their own government.
What we are doing now is mostly a police action. If we don't get rid of all the murderers in the U.S. by 2013 should we accept defeat and pull our police off the streets?
Our troops in Iraq are no different than our troops in Germany that protected Germany from the Soviets for 60 years. And we still have troops in Germany and Japan. Our troops will be in Iraq for a long time, get used to it.

Americans hate long wars. The War of 1812, the Civil War, Korea, and Vietnam were all popular at first then became hated as time went on. All lead to changes in political control of the country. Hilliary will be the next president, and she will keep us there until at least 2011, then she will slowly start pulling out for reelection time.

It's simple.
People don't have the "stomach" for anything that isn't neat. Some want humane executions, but they don't want the mess of a truly humane execution. Same with war. They say that they want freedom for others, but unless it's their freedom at risk they don't want the mess of killing people...enemies or friends/family dieing. That's a natural cost of war. People don't care enough about Iraq to pay the cost for them.

we need to end the war and bring out troops home. it's getting old that the insurgents keep invading the country and as we are trying to train the iraqis they seem to not want to learn. we are there taking their place.

Do you actually think you're going to be alive in 2013? Friends of terrorists usually have accidents you know.

No. I would say we need to stay longer.
That's what all the Democrat candidates said by the way, except Richardson.
