Um yeah, that's why you keep the toilet lid down. Cats like to drink water from odd places.

my cat does this too. he started when he was just a kitten, and we heard a SPLASH one night as we were going to bed, and he had fallen in the toilet. Since then, it hasn't discouraged him. He loves the toilet for some reason, and we have to keep the lid down all the time so he doesn't fall in again. He also runs to the bathroom anytime I am flushing the toilet b/c he loves to watch it flush, and he runs to the kitchen anytime I have the water running and he sits on the counter and watches it like he's in a trance. He's a very interesting cat. After I take a shower, he will jump in the tub and sit in the leftover water. I thought it was strange, but I guess some cats just really do like water, and like drinking it from random places.

Cats prefer cool water over room temperature, which is why your kitty likes the bowl. Putting some ice in the cat's regular water bowl should solve this issue. Be sure to put down the seat and close the shower door, though I can't see how shower water would really hurt the little guy.

My kitty does all this! Drinks from the toilet, the tub, his water dish, a glass, anything! He will whine for fresh water (even if his bowl was cleaned and filled only a few hours prior)! I've tried ice in the summer, and multiple water bowl. He's just weird.

Cats need & love stimulation. What's fun about a bowl of water? It is much more fun to drink out of the toilet. My cat, Tecka, drinks from the shower right after I get out. She will wait on the counter till I am done and out of the bathroom. When I come back she is in the tub lapping away!!! I think it's cute. Its all about variety. Bowl? BORING!!!!

Besides keeping the lid down, ahem, place a large bowl of water in the bathroom, on the counter or the floor, and change it like 3 or 4 times a day.
Praise the kitty when you see her drink from it. My cat loves a "sink drink" from a tiny stream of water from the tap.
What's really weird is that when she is finished, she urinates down the drain.
Yes, urine is sterile when it leaves the body, but of course I am constantly scouring the sink, and it does save on cat litter.
Remember Mr. Jinx from "Meet the Parents"? I WISH.

my female cat like to jump up to the bathroom sink counter and rub her head on the faucet until somehow it turns on drip-drip-drip ... [ok, I do this part] .. and then licks the water that runs down the side of her face
I've caught her drinking toilet water before, but it's been a long time .. I made sure afterwards that there was always clean fresh water available

if cats (of either gender) drink from the toilet, it's likely that the water in their bowl doesn't taste good to them i'm not exactly sure what you should do about it though but that may be the reason he does that

My kitten likes to do that too. I have to keep toilet seat down and close the bathroom door (she likes to climb into tub, or into sink, too). Now only if I can train my boyfriend to put the toilet seat down so she'll stop...
