Trust me, this is something that's said in Virginia and North Carolina -- at least amongst the people who live there that are Southerners...not the Jersey translplants.

Back in the 60's cheap tennis shoes( Non Chuck Taylors) were called Maypops.Most of us wore maypops

You Betcha! Even here in the Washington, DC and Maryland area, we certainly do call them "Maypops". Hey, not EVERYONE in the area is an overpaid politician. We poor folks live here, too!

I can assure you that you and the people in the class are the only people that call cheap shoes "Maypops". Whomever said the word "Maypop" in your class made it up. Look it up on google, you'll find no mention of "Maypop" as a term for shoes.

Edit: Ok, so after I posted that comment. I found a mention of it on urban dictionary, heh, go figure.
