Try Petfinder.com. It's a great website. That's where I found two of my cats. Good luck!

Brooklyn to Manhattan is usually a short trip on one of over a dozen subway lines that connect the two boroughs. There are bad places to be in Brooklyn, but a lot of desirable areas as well. I won't list neighborhoods because basically all of them have good and bad areas except the really high end places. Like Carroll Gardens and Dyker Heights. Mixed neighborhoods that could offer you a good value would include Park Slope, though that one is pretty safe and kind of skewed toward the upper end, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Crown Heights and Williamsburg. Bedford Stuyvesant was an area that was long regarded as dangerous, but lately it is becoming gentrified and the quality of the area might be such that the rents have not caught up yet. Whatever area you pick, look closely at the exact area that you will be living in.

Pixie is right. Any place that truly cares about cats, will not adopt out, sell, or give away a black kitten near Halloween. Wait until next month. There will still be millions of homeless kittens next month (sad to say) I just took in a 4 week old black kitten that someone had dumped. I will keep him as I will not even try to place him in a home right now, besides, he still needs some special kitten care and is already starting to become one of the family. When you do get a kitten I beg you to consider getting one from a shelter. In most places they will have already had a first set of shots, been dewormed, and in some places you can even get a voucher for spay/neuter when it gets old enough. Some places that I know of will charge a large adoption fee but will reimburse you for most of it if you have the kitten spayed or neutered (when it is old enough) and then provide a vet certificate as proof. If those were not enough reasons to get a shelter kitten then there is one more- you will be saving its life- 3-4 million kittens are euthanized in shelters in the U.S. every year.
Blessings to you!

I have had black cats and I can tell you from personal experiences be careful around Halloween
when I lived in a chicago suburb someone actually broke into my apartment to steal my black cat, the police who investigated said that they didn't think it was anyone I knew: they said from the looks of it, someone probably saw my cat in the window and just decided to take it
later that week a mass amount of black cats were found tortured and dead four blocks from my building
I have a black cat right now, he is staying with me the whole week of Halloween, I'm not letting him out of my sight
I did a search on petfinder of black cats in New York city, here are the results:
http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?animal=Cat&breed=Domestic+Short+Hair-black&preview=1&exact=1
but like pixy said, don't try to adopt a cat right before Halloween because then the shelters will be suspicious of you and may not want to adopt out to you at all, wait until after Halloween and you'll have a better chance of getting the feline friend you want most

Pixy, I'm quickly becoming a fan of yours. You show very good sense and careful thought in answering these questions here. Another good job.

Pixy is absolutely right. Black cats are tortured and killed at Halloween. Wait until Nov 1. Then try:

Just enter your zip code. Don't buy. Adopt. Thanks!
