If the OT says the messiah's name was Emmanuel, how come the angel told Mary to name the baby 'Jesus'? The names do not mean the same.

your right about how the names don't mean the same but here is the thing instead of looking at the little picture, look for the big picture. see when you looked up the meaning of each name did you see what the meant or did you just compare them so you could say "Hey I Found A Flaw!!! Come And See Christians!!!"

look i'm saying this a person once told me that just because one book says Jesus healed one man from sickness and other of the same account says healed three doesn't mean the Bible is wrong its that people look for the littlest flaw and miss the true message that Jesus healed someone of their sickness.

"Emmanuel" I think means "God saves". The name Jesus is actually a Greek form of "Yehushua" which means "God with us". The Greeks don't have a "sh" sound, and so they changed the middle sound to "s", and they always give male names an "-s" ending. The "Y" sound at the beginning was changed to "IE" in Greek, which has the same sound, and later the Germanic languages changed the "IE" to a "J".

Jesus embodied and personified the name "Emmanuel" which means "GOD WITH US." At Christmas we sing,"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel..." and we are talking about Jesus there.

Jesus was God's word-made-flesh, and the gospel of John says "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was WITH GOD, and the WORD WAS GOD..."

So, the Word who WAS GOD, came to earth to be "Emmanuel, God WITH US."

There are many names of Jesus because there are many personality characteristics of Jesus. I am excited that you, a foreigner, are taking an interest in the Saviour of the world. He is very real to me, along with God. Both of them are the reason why AMerica is the most prosperous nation on earth.
