From observing my cats it appears to be the done thing. Mine will lie on my chest facing me and will knead my chest with her paws. She knows just how deep to insert her nails so as not to cause discomfort for her Dad. The little devils are comfort seekers and I think your heartbeat lulls them into a sense of security. Was your cat weaned at an early age?

That is what kittens do while nursing on their mother, it helps to stimulate momma's milk glands. So what he is saying by doing that is "momma?" He loves you and sees you as his parent. Be flattered and give him a head butt... in cat lango that means ,"you're one of the gang." Return the love!

this is an old instict from when cat's were not domesticated, it was a method of marking teritory and sharpening claws

He IS kneading you. (A throwback behavior to being a kitten when he's feeding at his mother's breast.) It means he's happy, content and that you belong to him.
