I tan at Hollywood Tans and I noticed that my smile was brighter after a few sessions. I've been holding my mouth open and smiling during the session to see if it really does work. Is this possible or is just my imagination?

THIS IS A COMMON BELIEF. WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING IS THAT THE VISUAL CONTRAST BETWEEN A TOASTY SKIN SEEN AGAINST A SMILE WILL MAKE THE TEETH APPEAR BRIGHTER.
IN REALITY THIS DOESN'T AFFECT THE TRUE SHADE, VALUE OR HUE OF THE TEETH THEMSELVES.

No, it's just because your skin is darker that makes your teeth look whiter. I would advise against smiling while tanning, though, because then you will stay whiter in the creases caused by smiling. You will have a nice tan but with white smile lines.

Your tan skin is making your teeth look brighter. They do have teeth whitening kits that you can use while in the tanning bed though. I've never tried it but I know it's out there.

No, tanning cannot whiten your teeth. They will probably look whiter and brighter though because your skin is tanner, though. Best of luck!
