This can happen, although the ram does not actually change size. The way the machine reads it does not always quite reflect the true ram, also shared ram used for video reduces the machine's view of the ram. A Windows update to a video (and one or two other types) driver may affect the hardware's use of ram.

Please tell me how you get 200Mb of free RAM when using Vista? I struggle to keep 200 out of 512 free using xp. I have third party programmes continually ripping out useless stuff Windows tries to use. Vista is designed for for people who can afford massive amounts of RAM, huge hard drives and expensive equipment. generally people with more money than sense. They should have got XPrunning without the need for 20 security updates a month before releasing a pile of poo like Vista.

The reason is because Windows Update downloaded an update called "Performance and Reliability" update. Once Windows Vista SP1 update gets released, Vista should now be stable and safer.

I'm not that confident on installing upgrades that will transform one operating system into another in this case Windows Xp to Windows Vista. Your better off installing Vista from disk instead of upgrade, that way everything and any additional features will be there.

sounds strange.
vista is a bit of a RAM hogger but it hasn't got the capability of 'stealing' you ram...if you had 500mb before installing VR then you'll still have 500mb..the only thing installing vista will do is use up more memory.

Sorry but that is impossible. RAM is a phsical component in your computer and software cannot alter the amount.
