I am desperate for your help. Military men only for this question. My sister is dating a man and he sent her his pic in a uniform. He is claiming he was a Marine for 26 years, taken prisoner during the Iran hostage crisis April 4th, 1979. After 26 years he got out of the Marines after hosptialized for a long time and went into the Air Force, but took a low E-5 rank by choice. Here is the problem. My bf (ex military) claims the pic is bogus. He has a Trident on after training with the Seals. BF claims you can't get a Trident in the Marines and that unless you pass the BUDS class, which the Marines would not let you complete cause it takes two years. He is wearing a Navy Cross. BF says he can't wear that. The ribbons are in the wrong place, Trident on top, he's wearing this with Marine ribbons on an AIr Force uniform. Marine recruiter said that is allowed, bf says no. Can I email someone this pic and can we finally end this, it's been 3 days of hell.

Is your sister under 18? Did she ask you for your help?

If the answer to the first question is "no" and the answer to the second is also "no" then guess what - this is so none of your business. If your sister needed to know then she could run a background check on this guy. They aren't difficult or expensive in most states. At the very least she could be doing Google searches on the guy.

Are they getting serious? Like talking about moving in together or getting married? If not, then who the heck cares? They're just dating. If and when it does get more serious THEN talk about getting more information on this guy's past.

My gut feeling is that your sister is grown and can manage her own self without your help. Tell your boyfriend to let your sister learn from her own mistakes if she's going to make them.

If you were to cross over to another service, you still get to wear any ribbons you earned in your prior service. The Navy Cross, while normally awarded to members of the Navy and Marine Corps, can be awarded to a member of any branch of the service. Far as I know you have to be in the Navy to attend BUDS and become a SEAL, so that's right out. The other stuff seems a bit suspicious too.

He sounds "trumped up". The trident doesn't come until after you spend a year on a team AFTER BUD/S. The guy is bogus... tell your sister he's lieing and dump the loser!!!

BTW... BUD/S is approx 25 weeks long... inform your BF.

Please email me a pic of the dude and his name and SSN if you have it. I'll find out just what Junior really did accomplish in his life.

One last thing... he can wear another branches ribbons as long as they're in the right order. I wore both Army and Navy ribbons on my uniforms.. When it comes to unit medals like the Trident, if you currently are serving with that unit, it goes on the top. It it was in your past, it goes under the rack of ribbons and your current medal goes above them.

I sent you an email concerning this... just at first glance, without a lot of study, I wonder why he's wearing a Navy SEAL Trident and why a lot of his ribbons are out of order as far as precedence is concerned. I've been a Marine for 18 years and I don't know any Marines who wear a SEAL Trident. The only way that would be possible is if a Navy SEAL got out of the Navy and Joined the Marine Corps. as difficult and specialized as SEAL training and assigments are, I don't know a SEAL in his right mind who would get out of the Navy to become a Marine. As an example of good conduct, the SgtMaj of the Marine Corps wears his Good Conduct Ribbon with 4 bronze Stars to denote at least 15 years of good conduct. One would think that with 26 years as a Marine, this cat would have at least one bronze star in his ribbon. NOTE: mevadus is wrong. Only Navy SEAL trainees go through BUDS and earn the Trident when they graduate and become a Navy SEAL. Jump School is an interservice school operated by the Army and all branches can attend and earn the basic Army silver wings with three weeks of school and 5 static line jumps during the three week school.

On this topic is there anyway without going threw all sort of channels to check if someone was in the military? This guy I know says he was a ranger back in the 80s in Beirut. I've search all the public archives. I know they were there but get nothing on him. Just all seems hinkey to me. Anyone who can get info email me.

Sounds like the F.B.I. would be interested in talking to this gentleman, its very possible he is contravening the "Stolen Valor Act" as well as being a walking insult to the memories of past and serving members of the United States Military.

I say "OUT" the wanna be.

Dirt bag faker. If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck....you know the rest. stolenvalor.com Check it out. Freedom of Information Act will allow you to get a copy of his military records, if he even was in the military.
