can you charge energizer batteries even though the back says do not charge? Does it really matter, will it explode?

When it says Do Not Charge, they mean it.

Yes, it will explode. Not like dynamite, just a loud startling pop and a few bits and pieces will fly a couple feet away. And then the corrosive internal stuff will be exposed. It won't eat away stuff like mad scientist movies, but it will irritate the skin after a while, and it will kind of eat away a little at the wall paint and carpetting in a small spot.

It does matter. Charging non-rechargable batteries is not safe, and not very effective either, so it's just not worth it. It's much better to get rechargable batteries. I recommend Nickel Metal Hydride.
