Usually between 8-12 hours a day. Around 8-10 hours at night and 1-2 hour nap during the day. If your child sleeps longer nights, they might not need a nap during the day.

It completely depends on the specific child. Lots of children have ongoing behavior issues that can be traced to being perpetually overtired. At that age many kids still need a nap but don't want one or are unable to have one reguarly or are being weaned off of a nap and have a difficult time getting enough sleep because of scheduling conflicts. The child needs to be able to sleep until he/she wakes up on their own regularly. If you find yourself consistently needed to wake the child up in the morning then the child needs more sleep. If the child barely makes it through the day without getting really tired hours before bedtime, the child isn't getting enough sleep. My kids each needed a solid 11 or 12 hours of sleep each night and my son needed that plus a 2 hour nap each day in order to not be tired. Stress and lots of activity (emotional or physical) can make the kid unusually tired and so can growth spurts so there sleep needs can vary too.

It varies - textbooks will tell ya anything between 8-12, but not every child is a book.

My son just turned 4 and sleeps about 9 - and doesn't nap.

His older sister is 6 goes to bed at 8:30 and would sleep until noon if you let her.

All kids are different.

I don't really think their should be a set time. I say it's whenever they fall asleep and whenever they wake up. That's the way my parents did. We went to bed when we were sleepy, my parents stayed up late and we just sat in the living room with them until we fell asleep and they never woke us up at a certain time, we just woke up when we were ready. I am 27 now and I have no problem going to sleep or waking up early. My nephews however, their mom makes them go to bed at 8 p.m. and wake up at 6 a.m. every morning even on weekends and they are 9 and 10 years old and they hate it...my oldest nephew says he lays there forever before he falls asleep b/c it's too early. Good luck.
