It depends on how and where you were raised. It usually takes more courage to go against the grain. For me, yes, it took more courage to be an atheist because I was raised catholic. But then, I simply didn't believe in it so it wasn't really a choice, so it wasn't the being an atheist that took courage, it was the telling people that took the most courage.

It takes a far greater amount of courage to be true to oneself than it does to spout off the rhetoric of any group, and infinitely more courage to keep an open mind where differing beliefs are concerned.

I would have to say I can see both sides of it to a degree...it would be easier if one was just stubborn and selfish and not wanting to see the world in the condition it's in and ignore the fact that it was foretold in exact words at 1 Timothy 3:1-5 and Matthew 24:2-7.

......if he could look around at all the amazing things in this world, read articles about the intricate details of animals and see and feel the power of the ocean, look at colorful sunsets and not once think about a higher power.

Yes, it would be a lot easier to go through life ignoring facts, ignoring his responsibility to a higher authority or even giving thanks for what he has..

However....I can understand completely if one is disheartened over the hypocrisy in churches with their money-hungry, pedophile clergy, idolatry, etc. but I would have to urge that person to please, don't give up but to realize that a lot of these things happening today (mentioned above) were prophesied by people who lived thousands of years ago....and that there is more prophecy about it coming to an end and the relief that is in store....(Ps 37:10,11) (Isa 9:6-11) (Daniel 2:44) (Isa. 65:21, 22 ) etc.

No sh1t it does...think about it, what is the "norm?" Religion, what is not so "norm?" Atheism...so going out in public saying, "I'm atheist!" will get a lot more stares than someone saying, "I'm a Christian!!" You know? And a LOT of people don't like atheists, so they will try and hurt us in any way they can (whether emotional, mental, and yes, even physical.) So yes, it is more courageous...^_^

I'd say determination than courage. There's really no obstacle to use courage unless you fear in somthing.

you sound more like an agnostic. If there is no God and you are sure of it, you wouldnt need courage.

No. It always takes more courage (and less intelligence) to remain loyal to a lie.
