Christians and atheists, among others, live beside each other in harmony everyday, our differences rarely coming into play. The bashing is an R+S phenomena, with anonymity allowing the worst of each group to surface. Few people are so obnoxious in the real world.

It certainly appears to be the case here. I'm appalled at how disrepectful some people are. I wish everyone who participated in answering questions about religion did so in a respectful and serious matter.
One problem in discussing religion is that often one or both parties feel they are "right" and need to convince the other. There is a saying - "Never argue with an idiot, bystanders might confuse the two of you."
I have no problem engaging in dialogue with anyone, but I won't tolerate bashing. I also don't try to convince anyone nor do I feel my opinion is the only one or the "right" one.
Peace

Not true, many of us try and keep trying. Part of the problem is there are rude or strange people on each sides; a recent notable is "777" who posts questions from a Xian site and apparently doesn't read the answers. This sort of activity does little good for anyone.
A hopeful sign was that a question was asked: "what would you call a christian or a jew" and few if any responded in a negative way.

I agree that there is a lot of bashing going on both by Christians and by atheists. As Christians we should be the first to start with respect. CHRIST calls us to speak the truth with love. I know at times this is hard to, even I have a problem with this. But I do try.

I am not able to speak for the atheists, but I believe Christians can and SHOULD be able to speak to atheists respecfully without bashing them and it doesn't matter how we are spoken to in return. We are not being the witnesses we should be and showing the love of Christ which we claim to carry with us unless we speak respecfully to those who do not believe the same as us.
Ghandi once said that he was convinced the bible was true and Jesus was the only way. He went to a local crusade and Christians were so hateful to him he turned away from Jesus to never turn back.

yes, but not on a forum designed for debate and bashing. It's up to the individuals and if they are willing to talk without finger pointing and getting personal.

I can.... but honestly I have never met a professing atheist who did not turn hostile the second the word Christian is mentioned....some are better than others at controlling it...but all do it.... in my experience... and a Christian does not even have to be present... just bring up a Christian subject and watch the reaction... I was not a Christian for 52 of my 60 years... I have seen it hundreds of times...

Pointing out the flaws in a belief structure and thus questioning its value is not "bashing". Christians are simply wrong, and take being told that as an affront. Of course, scientific atheism is just as baseless, but that's a different story.

I believe they can. They just have to be two respectful people who can voice their opinions and even debate them without lashing out at the other. State your facts and be done. It's possible...It's just rare. Plus, people are REALLY brave on the internet when they're not in your face. It makes a big difference.
