My husband and I are amateur astronomers and belong to a large astronomy club. I would say the vast majority of people (mostly men) believe in a Deity. (We are Jewish but most are Christian in the club).

Astronomy has led us to an appreciation for Creation that only careful study of the "deep sky" can afford. There is a sense of grace given to us as mortals to be able to view the cosmos as only modern astronomers can.

The constant growth of knowledge in the field only leads to more questions and more wonder. At no time have I ever questioned my G-d's existence because of anything remotely connected to astronomy.

Note: I firmly believe G-d set up the Laws of Physics to manage His creation. It's for us to discover the exquisite, perhaps infinite, detail and variation in them. Thanks to Him for the challenge!

Most, yes.
A survey of top scientists from the National Academy of Sciences revealed that 85% considered themselves atheists.

My problem is with the 15%. How can you be a top scientist and believe that a god can annul the laws of physics at his will. How could you ever do any experiment and believe it?

If that is true, it is ironic because the most visible proof of our Creator is in our sky. The sun and the moon appear to be the same size in our sky even though one is much bigger and farther away. Courtesy of our Creator, Jesus Christ.
Any astronomers out there care to comment?

i think its really strange how its almost always a religion or atheiest debate. both are completely illogical and invalid. i would think while some scientists are religious and some are atheists, most would have to be agnostic. because anyone who is really understanding of the philosophy of science, and the nature of knowledge would have to admit god is probably logical "since its whatever allows us to be", and that humans probably have zero chance of ever understanding what the hell that is. we have a hard enough time even understanding simple things on this planet.

They are now. Since Galileo was threatened by the church (with torture) to repeal his statements about astronomy, Christians have become steadily more liberal.

Now they allow astronomers to practice their hobby.

they probably aren't because an astronomer should now that that unicerse was created at one time it' s infinite years old. If the universe was created at a certain time then something like God had to create it.

Why would they be? Just curious...now, maybe if a Chrsitian (who was an astronomer) found conclusive proof for the Big Bang...would he or she cover it up? If so...then shame on them...and if not, then that just proves that they can be open-minded...

I'd imagine so. They wouldn't get very far by sitting on top of a rocket with 56,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder and just asking God to not let them explode.

Why on earth would you say that? The earliest astronomers were devout religious figures...Islamic techniques of astronomy revolutionized the european understanding of the cosmos in the middle ages.
