Grannyzaltic, I bet if you really looked at France and Romania and Russia and countless other countries, they don't have near the rights and privileges and provisions for women that we American women do.

you've got it better than many societies, and worse than some others.

Certainly, right now, for a the near theocracy that America is, you've got it very good compared to other religious states, where women have far fewer rights. However, those countries that are less religious (let's say, european and scandanavian countries) offer far better opportunities and freedoms for women.

But- I'm glad you feel lucky. You can praise 'god' for this, or, you could praise the founding fathers of this country that had the foresight to make sure that there was a separation between church and state so the religious dogma could not be easily imposed upon you.

I just feel lucky to be a woman in this era. I couldn't imagine having to deal with the stuff that women of the past have had to deal with (not being able to vote, no right to an opinion, servant to a man - ha! I THINK NOT!)
Although somedays I wonder what life would have been like if I didn't know any different...

Being a woman in America is good if you have a job or have a partner to support you, if you have health insurance through that job, have credit to buy a home.

It sucks if you are a single parent who does not receive child support, if you don't have health insurance, if you work a minimum wage job and can't support yourself or your children on your income.

The lower middle class and poor fall through the cracks in the U.S. and there is no safety net. Some other countries offer benefits such as mandatory paid maternity leave for both parent's, health care, etc. that we don't have in the U.S.

The stress of being poor or barely making it leads to crime and substance abuse.

I have been on both sides and have lived overseas so I know what I am speaking about.
