No, it is not a stupid idea to start searching for scholarship money to attend BYU. The best time to start searching for scholarship money is in your junior and the first part of your senior year. I would not worry about getting a job at this point because your income and savings counts higher when you complete the FAFSA formula next year compared to your parents. I recommend applying for any scholarship that you qualify for no matter the amount because it will add up. I will include some free places to find money to attend college.

First, during your senior year, complete the FAFSA form in January, early February, or by BYU's financial aid deadline. Even if you think your family makes too much money to receive it, still complete the form. It is based on a percentage income formula of your parents' income and savings along with your income and savings, and then, it takes into consideration your family size (including how many will be attending college at the same time. You could receive the Pell Grant (depending on the EFC score), work study program (cash), scholarships from the endowment fund, and federal student loans (best interest rates). This needs to be completed each year from your senior year of high school until you graduate from college.

Second, keep your grades up because your state might have a grant or scholarship program for those who have a certain GPA for their college education which is not need based in most cases. Your high school guidance office should have more information on this.

Third, your high school guidance office has a list of local scholarships that you could apply for consideration. These typically are the easiest to get compared to the national scholarship programs.

Finally, join several free membership scholarship search programs. Each offers a customized search based on a form you have completed. These typically are national in nature. There is a scholarship for almost anything out there including wearing duct tape to the prom.

Good luck!

I would start with contacting the scholarship office at BYU. I didn't look into these things until I worked in the scholarship office as a work study, and should have. You will not believe the types of things they offer. I got a scholarship because I had proof of my heritage (some letters and pictures from Hungary, where some of my ancestors migrated from). There are just tons of scholarships out there; they will give you a scholarship if one parent was int he military...or if an ancestor was in a certain war, etc. and on and on. I would start there to see what money you can get free. Then, I would have a talk with your parents. If they are middle to upper class, then they are screwing you and they should know that. As a kid who came from a poor family, I had access to grants and student loans. You may not be eligible depending on your parents' income. They should know this; so inform them. As far as how to make money...you need a job; a real job. Your parents need to allow you to work. Selling things like Mary Kay and all that other junk usually requires an investment. You have to buy the makeup and resell it, etc. I would not recommend that. I would speak with your school counselor and see what other options there are for you. Good luck.

OK. DO all of these things now - like yesterday.

First, contact BYU financial aid office - NOW - to be put in the basket for whatever assistance they can offer.

Contact the local service organizations - Rotarian, Lions, Optimists, Loyal Order Of Water-buffalo - Mystic Knights of the Sea - you name it - to see what assistance they have to offer.

Look on the Web for

ESSAY CONTESTS -
Family Dollar is sponsoring an essay contest that awards $$ for scholarships to young students. I'm sure there are others out there

Government Pel grants (ask your counselor for information about grants and scholarships. Don't take no for an answer)

Professional associations - (Engineers, Architects, etc.) They often offer scholarships to outstanding students.

Don't hesitate to join the military - save $$ for school - and serve your country (even in a war!) AND get On the Job training for a good career (Backhoe operators earn more than teachers!)

Hi

You shouldn't have to raise money for college. When you become a senior, start to apply for financial aid in January of your senior year. This is the website you go to in order to apply:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

You will need one of your parent's 2008 income tax info when you do apply. You will need a PIN for yourself and one for your parent. You can get it from here:

http://www.pin.ed.gov/PINWebApp/pinindex.jsp

BYU will have a financial aid code, and I have looked it up for you. I assume BYU stands for Brigham Young University. If I'm correct then the school code is 003670. If you want to find other school codes, then go to this website:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLookupServlet

If you want to learn more info about the financial aid process, you can go here:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/faq001.htm

If you are eligible for financial aid, you can get loans and grants. You do not have to pay back grants. Do not start to do this at the last minute, because it is on a first-come first-serve basis. You should also talk to someone at BYU's financial aid office to see what scholarships you may be eligible for. Here is more info I told someone else about the financial aid process:

I hope this helps you.
