The check engine light indicates a malfunction in one or some of the engine and transmission control systems. The system is very complex. There are 100's of electrical circuits related to the illumination of the light. It should be diagnosed by a professional repair shop, not a shadetree mechanic or the guy down the street that has a set of tools he bought at the hardware store for fifty bucks. The electronics require electronic diagnostic equipment that allows a trained technician to analyze the waveforms of the sensors and the operation of the computer and actuators.
Sorry, I wish I had a cheaper solution for you but ....really, if you can't afford to maintain a vehicle, you should probably take the bus or other public tranportation. I know that will bring a thumbs- down but it's true. You may have to rearrange your budget.

An ill-maintained vehicle can be dangerous or even deadly.

Auto-Z is in the business of selling you parts, they will do that. They will allow you to use a code puller (which does not diagnose) to get the trouble code from your car so that they can give you a list of ALL the "possible" parts you can buy to fix the problem. The diagnostic code will tell a technician which circuit(s) requires a comprehensive analysis and thorough testing to determine what part is defective. Then the technican can verify that the repair fixed the problem saving you from installing a small warehouse of parts trying to "guess" the problem away.

And yes, it can be as simple as a loose gas cap.

ok, first issues first. vehicle Zone does not do diagnostics, nor does strengthen vehicle, or everywhere that doesn't have an entire provider keep. They pull codes in case you have a verify engine gentle on, and would furnish you with a typical concept of what gadget the problem is in. complete diagnostic tests are actually not unfastened, yet are lots greater thorough. If the vehicle has has in no way had a track up, initiate there. Plugs and wires are incredibly straightforward on a Neon. i don't propose Bosch Platinum plugs. i attempted them in my ninety 5 Neon and that they sucked. bypass with Champion Platinum or Double Platinum, those are the production unit plugs for that vehicle. Your gas filter out is non-serviceable on that vehicle, it incredibly is a component of the gas pump assembly in the tank. in case you do not commonly use any form of gas gadget air purifier, i desire to propose getting a can of a product talked approximately as Sea Foam in case you will locate it on your area, or another high quality variety air purifier. If the vehicle has over a hundred,000 miles and has in no way had the O2 sensors replaced , it fairly is a possibly suspect. additionally, mass air pass sensors are actually not much low priced areas for any make of vehicle, and you have a complicated time finding one in the aftermarket to greater healthful that vehicle. base line, while you're in a position, take it to a mechanic you believe to have it acceptable regarded at formerly you play musical areas and spend a team of money without fixing the problem.

Check your gas cap to make sure it's on properly and tightly. Perhaps the last time you filled up, the cap wasn't tight and some air got in.

places like autozone will normally check the codes for free. as long as the light is not flashing the problem isn't serious. that's not to say it isn't something that won't harm the engine over time. if the light is flashing then it is serious and requires immediate attention

Check all your fluid levels.
If you can't afford some kind of mechanic-even if just for the little things-then save money for bus fare. You'll soon be a pedestrian.
