i am 26 single mom of 1 child recieve no child support make aprox 27 k a year. i get earned income of about 3k when i file my takes. i use this money to suppliment my income (meaning i couldnt pay all my bills with out it). my live in boyfriend does help me financially (no where near like he should) question is if i where to marry this guy would i no longer recieve my 3k earned income. lets say he only makes about 13k a year. if i did marry what would be my best bet at filing, married but filing seperate ?? i am trying to figure out if i can afford to get married, lol.

If you marry him, your combined income will probalby be too high to qualify for the EIC. You'll definitely get MUCH less if you still do qualify. If you are married and file a separate return, you automatically lose the EIC regardless of what your income it.

$40K, your total combined income, would take you over the limit for receiving EIC. And if you file as married filing separately, you are not eligible for EIC.

Not sure how you're getting $3K for EIC - the tables for the most recent year show EIC of $795 for single or head of household, one child, income $27,000. Possibly the rest is for a refund of over-withholding? You'd still get that part, as long as he had enough taken out of his pay to cover his taxes.

Well lets see here. From reading your question here is a good suggestion. Download the 2006 tax forms from the irs web site at: www.irs.gov. Then take your taxes from last year then fill out the blank forms as "Married filing Jointly". You would probably be in a better position in the long run. Try it and see for yourself.
