Why is it ok for others to place what they believe on us or try and make us accept what they believe but its wrong for us to persuade others to accept what we believe?

Nah.
People don't care what you believe.
It's when you (Christians in general, perhaps not you, personally) tell people they're going to hell because they don't believe exactly the way you do, that others will bash you.
Think it all you want. But when you tell people that, don't be surprised when you're told what they think of your beliefs.

And don't whine about it.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Christians are bashed for the same reason non-Christians are - arrogance on the part of the basher.

Personally, I don't care what you believe. If you're a jerk about it, I'll tell you that you're a jerk.

As for the persuading others thing... I'm sorry I don't know the verse off-hand, but isn't there something in the New Testament where Jesus says if people aren't interested, to leave them alone?

Perhaps if you read through many of the nasty and ignorant posts "Christians" make on this site in answer to other people's (often legitimate) questions, you'll get an idea of why Christians feel they are being persecuted. They aren't. They are getting back exactly what they dish out. There is a certain type of "Christian" who is royally disrespectful, ignorant, and intolerant of other people's beliefs and then has the gall to wonder why he or she is being criticized for his beliefs. Antagonism breeds antagonism.

All you have to do is look through history and examine the actions of people who believed God was talking to them. Among them you'll find more wars between polytheistic cultures than you can count, the crusaders, the inquisitors, those who conducted the Salem witch trials, the European colonists who committed genocide against Native Americans, the Confederate slavemasters, the Heaven's Gate suicide cult, Islamic radicals including Osama bin Laden, and countless individuals who committed murder out of the blue. And from the atheist's point of view, you have the potential to become one of those people. Or you could just as easily just be claiming God speaks to you to justify some horrible thing you are doing.

Why are we bashed? Same reason we've been bashed since the days of the Roman Empire.

Fear, envy, hatred, jealousy, bigotry, idolatry, pride, arrogance, stupidity, immorality.....

.....did I mention fear?
