a. Ad in the phonebook. ~ Yes if it was local
b. Menu and pricing in hand ~ Yep
c. Tv commerical ~ No, I'd think if they were paying for tv ad I couldn't afford to eat there
d. Ad in Newspaper ~ Yep
e. Other ~ Discount voucher eg. 2 for 1 on Tuesdays, kids eat free on Monday, free bottle of wine on birthdays (on presentation of ID). Do you have shop-a-dockets where you live? I love those.
If you could get the menus on line would you use that website? ~ It wouldn't cross my mind to look online, but it's a good idea (and cheap advertising)

Seeing a tv commerical would probably be the best bet, but ads in newpapers and on the radio are appealing. And a website would be very handy indeed- especially if folks would want to call in orders to come pick up in half an hour or so.
Some other ideas: Coupons, or 'gift certificates'. Having a 'kiddie corner' might be nice too- I once went to a resturant where a small section had been 'gated off' and filled with books and a few toys, but was in the view of every table- a place for kids to go if their parents are relaxing for a meal with friends or something.

Phonebook? No - nobody looks in the phone book anymore.
Menu and pricing in hand? I don't know what you mean, but if someone hands me a flyer or menu I throw it away immediately.
TV commercial: possibly
Ad in newspaper: possibly - but don't just give the address, tell me the main intersection.
Other: friends take me there or tell me about it.
If I could get the menus on line I probably wouldn't bother. For me it's location, cleanliness, quality of food, atmosphere. It's the sign out front that's going to get my attention - and the look of the place - and the menu in the window.

Yes on the menu through a website. I often look for that feature when trying to choose a place.
Other than that I would go with B, I want to know what you have an how much. Ad's in newspapers are great too but it helps if you have a deal going on. Coupons will always get people in the door, please them enough and they'll come back plus they'll get the word out on the street.

Menu on line? Absolutely!! An ad in the newspaper with a coupon and being able to check out the menu on-line (assuming I like the menu) would bring me in!

My wife and I go to a farmer's market every Sunday afternoon. There was a booth there with the Italian manager of an Italian restaurant that was not far off, handing out free samples, talking with customers, making a personal connection. The food was fantastic, we built a relationship with the manager, and we love eating there now. I know this is a pretty involved special circumstance, but it worked.
We also always check websites, and review sites like yelp.com and tripadvisor.com, as well as recommendations from friends or co-workers. Ads don't work too well, but a coupon in combination with the the things mentioned above tends to.

I notice the ad in the newspaper first. And it usually has their website so I can check out the menu and prices before deciding to go there.
Between newspaper ads and word of mouth, that's where most of my customers came from.

TV commercial, or driving or walking past the restaurant while I'm out.
I would then check to see if they had a website, and would check out their menu and pricing, then decide if I want to visit.
I would also look for specific advertising that describes the restaurant as welcoming to small children. We have a 19 month old toddler, and would love it if a restaurant openly advertised accomodation to kids.

Menu and Pricing in hand, especially if the prices were reasonable and they had a variety of food. Commercials might work but they cost a ton. If you do a commercial make sure to show the atmosphere of the restaurant so everyone knows what kind of rest. it is.

Advertising is definatley the way to go. Trust me. If you dont advertise no one will know youre there. I always find that if there is a coupon in the ad that it pulls me in more into trying a new place. Once people come in and the food is great than word of mouth will bring poeple in. I would definatley use the menu online. Its so handy.
