I am on or about 60/40 on this issue. I am a single mother with a strong educational and work background; however, soon after giving birth to my son I found myself unemployed and literally on the verge of a nervous breakdown wondering how I would care for him as my savings began to evaporate almost over night. I had no choice but to seek help and thank goodness it was available at that time. I do not believe this should be lifetime help, but temporary help when required. Great that you have been fortunate enough not to see or experience the other side. Considering your parents allegedly struggled it is ashame that they do not see sometimes a little temporary assistance goes a long way. No ONE ever makes a successful business without stepping on a few toes along the way. I think you need to get off of your highety-mighty perch. You are just a child and need to concentrate on school. Not things you have no idea about.

Not every one is a poor lazy bum, in that respect stop listening to your parents, their are plenty of hard working poor that will never make a six figure income even if they work six jobs a day, which no one can, not every one is fortunate enough to be smart or have a gimmick to make money. People can barley afford homes any more in this country and rents are outrageous. Just keeping food on the table and bills paid is quiet difficult if you have children, you need to grow up a little more and do some investigating into the working poor, making 5 to 10 dollars and hour will get you know where. Try paying health care Ins on those wages for a family. Even for a single person it can be expensive, and the older you get the more it costs, and if you become disabled or injured or you need and operation and then you saddled with 200 thousand dollars in medical bills, you have no idea what your talking about, You and your parents have yours so you think everyone else is a bum, and that is the way most people think that can afford health Ins. I remember Oprah saying the same thing she had money to pay for Ins and didn't think about any body else, she did a show on the subject. Wise up.

Lazy bums? you are obviously very clueless. People on welfare are already covered, the people who need medical insurance HAVE JOBS. The current trend among employers is to not offer insurance anymore, and the cost of private insurance is going up every year.

Using your own family's CURRENT situation as an example isn't very smart because everything changes over time. It is very short sighted of you to think that things won't change at all in the next 10-20 years.

Right now your family has very low insurance costs, you and any siblings you may have are young and your parents are likely in their mid 40's. This is not a time where families are likely to need much in the way of medical care.

As your parents age they will need it more and more, when that happens the insurance company will begin to charge you more, you will come face to face with one of them needing a procedure or medication that isn't covered, the exclusion of course will be hidden in the fine print.

Eventually the insurance company will drop the coverage altogether for any reason they can. When this finally happens just TRY to find another insurance company that would give them a policy. At this point people are forced to pay out of pocket (good-bye hard earned savings) or just let a parent die.

Do a little research on WEALTHY people who lose their insurance coverage this way, how they lose everything, their homes, their savings, I mean everything because someone got sick.

Why don't you take a peek at the policy your parents have, look at what isn't covered, look for things like "benefit cap" and "exclusions"

Take off the rose-colored glasses and think about what would happen if things changed for the worst because one day they will.

You do NOT "KNOW" that anyone can make it, simply because your parents did.

Furthermore, it's impossible for EVERYONE to "make it" since there aren't enough 7 figure jobs for everyone.

It's in everyone's best interest for people to have healthcare. It's good for public health that diseases are treated sooner rather than later, and that medical conditions in general be treated before they become more serious (and require the most expensive emergency care).

You aren't alone in your heartless and selfish attitude that YOU're doing well, and everyone else can just die.

Most Americans are human beings, who have compassion and good sense. They disagree with you. They understand that, in an economy with not enough jobs for everyone, and where most jobs don't cover healthcare, that the current system is both cruel and stupid.

But, to answer your question, no, you aren't the only one with a cruel and short-sighted attitude on this issue, you're just in the minority.

And there's no 'u' in 'wrong.'

Not all are wealthy. I am glad your parents are successful. Hillary plan is to make health care possible for all Americans. For the poor people, a cheaper state plan. But that is only part of. It will also make it easier for all Americans to buy a private insurance plan without their employer. At present, most insurance is provided employers to their employees. Relatively few American can afford to buy insurance on their own. The employers give employees a choice of a couple of plans only. The bigger the employer, the cheaper the rates will be. Part of Hillary's plan will make it easier for Americans to purchase insurance coverage outside their employer, giving them more choices at often better prices. America is the richest country in the world yet we rank very low on health care. This is not right. What is so wrong with trying to correct a problem instead of pretending there is no problem. Trust me. I understand the problem. I own a small business and I struggle to give my employees insurance. It actually is their main concern of employment. It is a very big issue with them as they can not afford insurance on their own. Also think of this. If your parents were not sucessful (but still hard working people )whose employer did not ofter health insurance, would you deserve medical care. If you fell down and broke your arm, would you still deserve to be treated?

Hey, kid. Do you really think that people who are poor are lazy?
I suggest you go to a construction site, go see a carpenter. GO look at the millions of people who work like hell and still live in poverty.
I believe the immigrant story. I am an immigrant myself and am doing relatively well. I saw very many people who never had half the chances I did.
Life is not so easy that one can say, as though it were a mathematical equation, if you work and you are intelligent you will be well off. Fact is, life punches you in the face quite often.

It is my personal belief that I will never be happy in a world where my betterment depends on the misery of others. Currently it is so. Every time you put on your sneakers, think of the children who sow them. When you eat tomatoes, think of the immigrants who work so hard to pick them and still have a hard time feeding their children.

The issue is education, if people are uneducated they cannot compete with those who are educated. Not everyone get the benefit of an education, do you think that is fair?

As for Hillary... you have much to learn. She is as much evil, as much a partisan of the oppression of the poor and of foreigners and of war as the most fanatical republican.

Anyhow, I hope you grow to see that in life, we get much more by making those around us happy than by propagating misery in materialist self interest. Individualism is a dead road, for your sake, learn that before you dry inside.

Peace.

PS: Have you checked out Rage Against the Machine?

edit: the cat who says a Canadian politician came to get surgery in the US... ask him what the name of the politician is.
LIARS are the salt of he earth.

I understand, and I agree that it is the parents' responsibilty to work hard and get health insurance for their children.

But what about the poor children who didn't ask to be born? And whose parents can't afford health care? It's not fair to let the children suffer. If you want to see what happens when we don't help, go to a country like Mexico and see all the people living on the street. Do you want to wake up every morning to neighborhoods and streets full of diseased, poor, dirty, begging children?

I know it sounds crazy, but that's exactly what will happen over time. And the children without medical care will bring disease and illness to the rest of us through schools and daycares.

If your parents weren't able to be as successful as they are, do you think you should have been left to suffer with illnesses, toothaches and worse?

And what if your parents lose their jobs or business? What if your family is forced to declare bankruptcy? Do you feel that then you should not receive assistance when you need it?

Before you make political decisions, it's important to think of the shoe on the other foot.

When I was 16 I believed like you did. And today I still do.

I think people should survive on their own, but doesn't mean that I do not donate to charities, etc. I just don't feel that it is the government's responsibility to ultimately raise and take care of each person's well being.

Recently a Canadian politician came to America to get a surgery done. Sadly they get free health care in Canada. I guess it wasn't good enough.
