-To make cat/animal lovers laugh, smile, sigh and go "awwww"
-To entertain with their goofy antics
-To hunt rodents that overpopulate our yards
-To lay in the middle of roads to that we have to cuss them out when we drive up close to one.
-To annoy all dog lovers (although our cats have made my boyfriend into a cat man)
-Occasionally turn a dog lover into a cat person...(see above)

Well, they do many things, just like all other creatures.
Their purpose? Just to live.
To enjoy their lives before they die.
They are really good at that.
They are also a lesson for all on how to keep your body-parts in good working order (didn't cats invent yoga, aswell as zen?)
Most of all they are an example of democratic free-thinking, a perfection of creation not only physically, but mentally and emotionally too. And without cats, what would inspire artists and poets?
Dogs are great; they really are. But they are predictable.
Cats can love their owners in the same way dogs do, except they choose to do so.
And they will show it in really original ways!
If your cat doesn't love you, your life will be very empty.
If you don't love cats, or at least appreciate them, you're already a very sad person.

The cat's original domesticated purpose was to protect grain silos in Egypt from rodent infestation. So good were they at this job that they became revered as gods. Nowadays, we have more modern storage methods and rodent control isn't that much of a factor, so cats become companions, therapists, occasionally working on farms to control the rodents in that venue.
Since people are individuals and have widely varying taste about what kind of animals they like, you may well ask yourself what purpose a parakeet or tarantula has as a pet. It just personal preference.

I think they are great for people who don't have enough time for a dog. I'd love to have a dog, but I'm at work all day and my husbands schedule is not better. A cat would be a good alternative since you don't have to take them for walks.
Also they are really cute and a great snuggle partner!!!

I like Alex's answer. I live in an apartment and work all day long so I couldn't have a dog. But I can have cats, and I do have four. They make great pets, great companions. They are easy to care for, can entertain themselves, you don't have to walk them, and are cuddly wonderful creatures. If you don't like them thats your choice. I love cats.

Cats are here to bring natural beauty and elegance into our homes.
Dogs are pack animals and are subservient to a pack leader. In the domestic environment, you are the pack leader and your dog does what it is told. What appears to be faithfulness is often the submissive behaviour of an animal evolved to be sociable.

nicely, you spot, cats are right here because of the fact the ruler of the planet Persei 8, Vlorg, sent them right here as spys so he can slowly study our procedures, and then take us over utilising our very own weaknesses to his benefit. a minimum of that's what Uncle Greg advised me.

Well, before they were domesticated..they were part of the ecosystem just like every other wild animal. They were domesticated for companionship just like dogs. What's not to get??
