Hello!
The coal fired units produce electricity by burning coal in a boiler to heat water to produce steam. The steam at tremendous pressure, flowes into a turbine, which spins generator to produce electricity. The steam is cooled condensed back into water&returned to the boiler to start the process over.

Coal used as a fuel in the Boiler for making super heated steam ,hence the steam run the Turbine - which run the Generator and getting the power to the Grid.
IE .Coal producing - heat energy - converting water in to high pressure steam - drive the turbine - mechanical energy converted into electrical energy by electrical generator and produce electricity.

Simple answer is electricity isn't generated by coal, but by coal burning power stations. The coal is used as the fuel to heat the water for a steam turbine, this in turn drives a shaft in a generator and voila electricity.
