Constant shaking of his head, scratching at his ears and rubbing his ears along the floor. Take him to the vets as soon as possible.

With my dog, you can easily tell the difference between an itchy ear and an ear infection.
With an itchy ear it's just your normal scratching.
With an ear infection he really "digs" his head into his paw as he itches. It's like he's trying to itch deep into the ear canal. Very intense, very focused on one spot, and a bit relaxing (like when you scratch his favorite spot and he goes into bliss).
There's also a sort of sideways shaking of the head, where you can tell the focus of the shake is the ear. (Shake your head as if you were trying to clear your ear or get something out and you might have an idea.)
Every dog is different, but I've never had a problem spotting an ear infection. If your dog has symptoms, definitely take it in to the vet.

Please make sure it is an ear infection, the systoms are shaking of the head, look inside the ears, you will see a build up of wax, you can get ear infection drops for dogs from your local petstore which tells you what to do, but i would take your dog to the vet to make sure, our dog had all the syptoms of an ear infection but turned to be a brain tumour so always check with your vet never assume anything ok

When my dog had an ear infection, she not only constantly tried to scratch her ear, she also did this flappy thing with her head. She would shake her head fast (almost as if she was shaking off water from a bath but only on her head), her ears would flap so fast that they would hit the top of her head and the bottom of her head and produce a flapping noise. You dog might also try to brush their head along couches, beds, furniture, etc. The best way to determine whether your little buddy has an ear infection would be to take them to a vet.
Good Luck!!

"Ear infections are very uncomfortable for your pet. Your dog or cat will show his discomfort by shaking his head or scratching at his ears. Often, the ears will become red and inflamed with an offensive odor and perhaps a black or yellowish discharge. If your pet tilts his head constantly, it could be a sign of a middle ear infection."

Best to take your dog in to the vet for a check.

Just to let you know it may not even be an ear infection. But go to vet to make sure. I though tmy puppy had an ear infection cuz she would shake her head and itch them like crazy. But it could also be that their ears are to wet and have that gross black stuff in them. You can if you postive it is not an ear infection get the dog this powder stuff that goes in the dogs ear and dry it out. And let me tell ya it works wonders. Sorry I dont know the name of it, but you could try a petsmart or any animal place that is around you. Good luck

Generally not acting their usual self is a good start. You will know if there is something wrong with them then. Also inflammation of the ears, red ears on the inside and if it seems to be scratching them a lot are also signs. If in any doubts would have a vet check it out for you.

They dog scratches the ear, or shake the head constantly. Also, the ear smells very terrible. You see some discharges build up inside the ear.

If you get into the habit of regularly cleaning ears, you can see a change of colour. Really dark brown wax is an indication of potential problems, before it gets to the red, inflamed nasty point. My vet prescribed a different 'stronger' ear cleaner when she had a problem and so was able to avoid antibiotics. I also have to clean her ears twice a week as she is prone to infection. I really, really wish they could make a nicer scented solution though!

One of the main symptoms our dog shows is that she shakes her head a lot. Also, when you look in her ears, they will be red, not pink. He may be very sensitive and try to keep you from looking in his ears, too. Ear infections are pretty easy to clear up, though--your vet will prescribe an antibiotic, such as penicillin, and that will take care of it.
