I just had some done 2 weeks ago and not only was I scared but I have thrown up in the past while getting impressions. The good thing nowadays is that most places have flavored impression paste. I had watermelon. That makes it a little better. Be sure to tell the person doing the impressions of your fears so they know beforehand. Ask them to do the lower impressions first. Think just about breathing and focus your eyes up and away. When they do the uppers, tilt your head forward and breathe and try to relax. It will be over before you know it. It really was not as bad as I expected.

Best Answer: I think it would be very closed minded of a person to think that way, but I've had people form unfair opinions of me for that reason. I have one tattoo on my ankle, so it's visible when I wear shorts. When I met a former girlfriend's parents, they looked pretty unfavorably on my choice to have a tattoo. Even though I was always kind and respectful to them and their daughter, it seemed like something that they couldn't get past. I respect their opinions, but I also feel that it's unfair to think I'm not still the same great guy that I was before they saw the tattoo. Another example would be when I was working in the business world. Sometimes I would have to go into the office on the weekend to work on a project and I'd wear shorts. If any of the partners saw the tattoo, it would open a discussion about it. I don't know if they really thought poorly of my choice or if I was just imagining it, but the fact was still that I was a solid performer, and on a daily basis it wasn't an issue because I'd wear slacks. I think dental school was the worst. Some of the faculty would really get on my case if I wore shorts up to the lab or during lectures. Once again, it should have been a non-issue because in clinic, with my patients, in my office, I always have pants on and I think that I do great work.

You just need to relax, and concentrate on breathing through your nose and not your mouth. It is uncomfortable but if the alginate they are using is a quick set one, the most it will be in there will be less than a minute. Also, leaning forward a little after they have placed the impression tray in your mouth always helped my younger patients so it didnt feel like it was going down the back of your throat. The person doing the impression needs to not overload the tray with the alginate as well, that way there isnt so much squishing around in there. Breath, you will get through it!! Hope that helps!

There is ZERO pain or discomfort having an impression taken. NONE!
Its just a matter of placing a gum shield (tray) in your mouth, with a soft silicone type material. When we remove this we have an impression of your teeth and can accurately make crowns, veneers, bridges etc from this.

its really not that bad, try taking your ipod or mp3 player (you're allowed) thought you're not allowed to be sedated for something as simple as this. The actual feeling of the stuff isnt that bad its just a bit cold. hope this helps.

Having an impression taken does not hurt in the least. It just feels as if you have a load of Plasticine in your mouth for less than 2 seconds. Simple.
