No. other than being stewards what the Lord has given us, You could build another church for what it would cost to fill it with Lazy Boys.

Pews came into use to help one sit upright and attentive. They were not built for comfort. They are a remnant of the days when it was considered sinful to take any pleasure in what you find around you, otherwise the comfort of the seat would distract a person from the sermon. Now days it is cheap seating, though the cost of a well-made pew can set you back a few thousand dollars, there are cheaper ones as well.

That is just a way old time churches were built and a lot of places were modelled after those.
Newer pews aren't too bad.
My church has movie theater type seating.
The other church where I am working has uncomfortable pews.
No theological reason -- unless maybe it is to make sure we don't get too comfortable, fall asleep and miss the sermon?

Benches were probably the first form of congregational type of seating after the use of sitting on the floor. Only in recent times has seating in some churches come to be more comfortable.
Hard benches do however keep you humble.

Count yourself fortunate. It wasn't that long ago that you jolly well stood up for the service...the WHOLE service. In Orthodox churches they still do.
You're not there to get all comfy and cozy and dissect each other's fashion sense, ya know. You're there to worship God and to learn from your leader (priest, pastor, minister etc.) how best to live your life in accordance with Christ's commands and desires. You're not there to catch up on the sleep you missed by staying out all Saturday night roistering either.

Not a theological one... but they're there to keep you awake! =) Though, I have to say, the one time I went to a Catholic Mass.... I fell asleep.

No sir. That was probably the way Constantine established it. W/o backs I imagine. I think benches were cheaper.

Yes.
They are meant to keep you from feeling too relaxed, thus causing you to sleep.
