Over the counter flea killers are not good for your cat and even a vet will tell you that. Most vets give the frontline once a month to cats and it kills the fleas that bite on the cat but then there are always new ones that hatch and it continues to kill them. The vets also carry a pill to kill all the fleas on your cat right away. They even give it to nursing mothers. If your cat has a lot of fleas then I would get it first and then follow up with the frontline.
If your cat is a house cat then you will have a bigger problem. They will be in the house too. Our vet supplies a fogger that kills fleas quite well and is better then the store bought foggers and you will probably have to use it also. They do have a fleas killer spray in the stores too and you can also spray it. They have it for furniture, etc. But be sure to not have the cat in the room you are spraying and then open windows afterward and follow all instructions on the label if you use it.
I have had fleas in my house and on my cat too and they are really hard to get rid of once you get them. I got rid of mine this way.

I would say Advantage ( a once a month treatment) because I've always had excellent results with it. But I just heard about Revolution which gets rid of fleas and also heartworms which up till now I didn't know cats (even housecats) could get. (I thought just dogs) You should check into that at your vet. I don't know how much it costs, but I think I'll try it next time. Oh yeah, vacuum your house more that usual for a couple of weeks after treating. Fleas spend most of their life off the cat.

it could be a tick or is it spelt tic now here goes does your cat go outside or is it a house cat if its a outdoor cat and goes in the garden it can pick fleas up in the garden and it can be a never ending battle as once the cat has fleas the house has fleas, you can buy drontal flea killer it is expensive £35 for about 4 vial (you put it on the back of the neck) each vial suppose to last a month, or you can buy tablets (Johnson's fleas 4 cats) these cost about £5 for 3 tablets quick acting short term solution starts killing fleas in 20 minutes 100% fleas dead in 24 hours but it only lasts about a day, carpets and soft furnishings will have flea eggs and flea larvae you could spray the house with insectides but not nice, what i use is a steam cleaner, blast the carpets, bedding, chairs and all the nookes and crannies, as its steam it will not soak the furniture and as its steam it kills fleas, flea larvae and all other bugs

Frontline....just dab it behind the neck and fleas-be-gone! Works with my cats...usually have to use it once a month or so. It's kind of expensive, but well worth it to get rid of those pesky little fleas that can make a cat so miserable!!
P.S. It has to be bought from the vet

Without a doubt, Frontline Plus! I love it and have used it with my cats since they were old enough to receive applications. You will also want to make sure you bomb the inside of your house as well, making sure you get the places where your cats bed down! You have to get them at the source as well. This product prevents the fleas from laying eggs and the eggs that are laid don't hatch!

Frontline is the best i know of, i used it on my cat and it stopped her scratching very quickly. Also, its only a small treatment one a month to the back of her neck. Nice and quick with no messing around trying to fight the cat to get some treatment onto her.
