Sir bobby gave a great link - Everyone who thinks they know the laws in another State should at least do a little research....
Yes, over 18 you may own and possess long guns, be it an AK-47, SKS, AR-15, or any other "assault rifle".
NO PROCUREMENT OF REGISTRATION PAPERS ARE NEEDED!!! - And you cannot remove the buttstock and shorten the barrel to convert a rifle into a pistol - that would be illegal. You may purchase an AK-47 pistol, but it would have been manufactured and serial numbered as such, and then you would have to be 21 to legally purchase it.

For the SKS you are totally fine as for the AK there is a few stipulations, a guns design stipulates its type, many AK's and a few SKS's are modified with pistol grips and the rear butting is removed, this changes the weapons classification. Long guns are legal for all persons over the age of 18 pistols require you to be over the age of 21 and you must procure registration from your local sherriffs office. It is 100 percent your responsibility to make sure what youa re buying is legal but most shops will know the difference and treat you accordingly. And yes Marvin you are a certifiable idiot, automatics are illegal period without special licensing.

Funny! Thanks for the laugh just before I turn in for the night. Chinese Type 56 SKS carbines are highly prized and sell for a premium that might be as much as 40% more than, say, a Yugo. Yeah, I'll say you're going to end up with a semi-auto, too - A California legal semi-auto. (Bullet magazine release and all that!) However I do think you're right about, 'gay ole California'. That's, probably, a principal reason, 'Why', one of these days, God's going to dump most of California into the ocean.

No one stopped to ask why a 19 year old needs an AK47?? Too powerful for hunting, and an overkill for self defense. It's your right, and I support that. But why do you, at 19 desire an AK47?
Yes, I have fired one. I'm active duty military...12 years and counting.

Marvin you are a clown disguised as a human. Neither of those are "automatic" weapons unless procured as so with a class III (or illegally).
Your input does not apply here.
