I think most women would predominantly cite hygiene and safety issues.. there's a strong perception that men's restrooms tend to be less clean than women's. And as mentioned above, having urinals in a unisex toilet would just present even more problems. There's also a safety issue - bathrooms tend to be stuck in secluded areas of buildings and are specifically designed so that those outside can't hear what goes on inside. I think a lot of women would feel very uncomfortable using a unisex toilet at a low-traffic time and knowing a complete stranger could walk in when they're at their most vulnerable and all that's between them and him is a cheap sliding lock. A unisex restroom may work in a small office setting (though I imagine people would still feel awkward about it) but it would never work as a public toilet due to the safety issues.
Also, I don't think a gas station only having one stall is what you're talking about, is it? There's a difference between a single toilet where only one person may be in it at a time and a bathroom with multiple stalls where the sexes have to mingle.
And to the poster above who mentioned "tampons and pads floating" - ugh! What women's restrooms have you been in? I've certainly encountered a few toilets left unflushed in my life, but in general even the filthiest public restrooms do NOT have sanitary products lying around. And if you walk into a stall and find a floating tampon (this may shock you, but we don't flush pads, there are special trash receptacles in ladies' toilets for them), how is that any more disgusting than a guy who doesn't flush? Way to express your misogynistic fears of scary, icky girl-things. Because menstrual fluid is way grosser than sh*t, right?
Edit: He deleted his answer, I guess he realised how retarded he sounded!

Many places do, especially if they're small and just have one. Otherwise, most people prefer separate restrooms since each sex seems to think the others' restroom is gross. Not to mention most men's rooms have urinals which they couldn't have in a unisex restroom, which would mean that men would be finding out about the long lines that women frequently have for the restroom. Just be glad you don't have to find out how the other half lives on that one, David C. lol

Good question. They're actually starting to pop up more and more. It's still a bit taboo in most places. It may never happen that all restrooms will be unisex, but they'll become more available eventually. Otherwise, if you have to go, you have to go... to the the first available restroom! Right?!

Personally I would not want a unisex bathroom (like on Ali McBeal) I really don't want to hear men farting in the bathroom.
Women are much more proper about that sort of thing, well at least before they hit 70.

I think it is a basic safety issue. I would not my 9 year old going into a restroom where the opposite sex can be in there without question.

Because society cannot act like grown folks and just do their business, you always got to have a few that want to tap their foot and hand gesture under the stalls.
As far as chicklione up above...you talk about farting men...what about the females with their tampons/pads left floating around? That's not very tempting unless your trying to earn a set of redwings. LOL

Women don't fart, yeah sure. If you have unisex bathrooms, then you can blame the guys when you let it rip..

bc men are gross and piss all over the seat or dont even put it down. women do not want to use an unsanitary bathroom , we have our period and need to have some privacy when taking care of those needs.
