My next door neighbor's house is only about 25 feet from mine. They are retirees who are always sitting at their dining room table...I'm a mom of an 8 year old and 3 teenagers...always active and going places.Their dining room has a window right next to the table, and they used to have a mini- blind there...but recently took it down. The window is open all the time, and with no covering, they can literally see and hear all that goes on in my driveway, all of our comings, goings, kids' arguments,etc...I feel like I'm in a fishbowl. Also,he can't hear well and has the TV so loud that I can hear it clearly every time I go outside.*sigh*
Would this bother you or not?

To the 1st respondant--I have blinds on my windows--but they see all that we do outdoors...very up-close and personal.

Not me. They are pensioners and therefore I'd afford them some respect for that - I may be hard of hearing when I get old. It wouldn't bother me them seeing what my family and I did outside the house either.

It's funny about annoying sounds ...the more you think about them, the more annoying they become. We had neighbours who jackhammered 5 metres from my bedroom for 6 months, 6 days a week starting at 7am. I often work nights so the jackhammering would start about middle sleep. I realised I couldn't stop the noise so I started just sleeping through it. The same neighbours kid took up trumpet playing and I just decided I would enjoy it ...I did this for self protection because, in truth, I still loath the neighbours

Yes it would bother me but, if I can't change something, I just have to let it go

Having said this, I would also suggest extending the height of the fence and putting some fast growing shrubs in. Inside the house I'd get some blinds and maybe if I could afford it, consider double glazing.

At the moment they are filling the space between the houses with their presence ...it's time you and the kids went out and boldly filled that space ...don't get chased into your house

Just had a thought ...maybe they have their television loud so they can hear it over your kids arguing hee hee hee (c;

I get the impression your neighbours can't see into your home but only your driveway - if you're worried about your neighbours getting to know your 'business' because they maybe able to hear everything that goes on in your driveway then perhaps take, whatever it is that's important, indoors.

I have apartments over looking my house, some with and some without curtains/blinds. Some can see right into my bedroom....doesn't bother me.

I'm sure many feel like they live in a fish bowl these days.

Your neighbours, since they are retired, have very little to do other than watch the world go by - whatever they wear indoors is their business and their business alone - perhaps you should avoid looking in.

It would bother me in the sense of their tv being too loud, but not in any other way. Without their curtain/blind, it wont make any different to hearing your kids arguments etc as its the open window that allows them to hear. Maybe they havent got a lot else to do and are taking an interest in who is coming and going from yours. Personally it wouldnt bother me, but can see why it would bother others.

Hello Sunshine,

Well although I would find it SO embarrassing and not like it at all. I would most likely put up with it. If they have a window they can do what they like with it. I would however try to think of a way of making my house a bit more private. Perhaps you could stick a bit of trellis up between two posts on your side and grow a lovely rambling rose up it. One that's appealing and fragrant. Then light would still pass through but it would be like nets at the fence. This would grow slowly and could be added to if you wanted, with a lovely honey suckle or Jasmin.

The TV sound could probably be sorted amicably but so what if you can only hear it when you're outside, but why are you so bothered about them seeing you - they've probably not got much else to do (except watch that TV of course) and they might just enjoy watching a happy family going about their daily business. If you don't like seeing him in briefs in his own home, look the other way. Sorted ! ! !

I used to live in a house with very close neighbors. They would watch my every move when I was outdoors. Make a point to stop what you are doing and wave at them and yell "hello". This will let them know that you know they are watching you and they have drawn attention to themselves. They will soon realize that they arent being as discrete as they think they are and learn to mind their own business.

Yes, that would bother me. I mean you can't really say anything about them taking their blind down but it would still be annoying: like you have a more interesting life than they do so for entertainment they'll watch your family.
And the TV thing would drive me insane. However, the TV is somehting you can sweetly discuss with them and ask if they could turn it down a notch.

Our neighbours have just been evicted through the ASBO team, it took 3 years of hell to do it, they persecuted the whole road, killed our rabbit, played loud music all night 7 days a week, were violent with each other, drunk, drugs, social services took their children, they wrecked cars, poured petrol through letterboxes to terrify people, windows and doors were smashed and boarded up and the council wouldnt replace them as they would be smashed again the same day, I could go on and on, your neighbours are my dream, you are lucky, It is not his fault he is deaf and needs the tv up a bit, if he is deaf he wont hear you all will he? If they move and you get my old ones in you will understand how lucky you are.

Yes it would bother me, but just like when I lived next to train tracks, I would learn to ignore it.

Just part of the fun of living in a city, neighbors like that make me long for my old house in the country
