if I cut back on all that, what else is there to eat?

At the beginning of this year, my husband was 350 pounds. He started in April just laying off fats, sugars, refined carbs/starches, and even limiting the whole grains somewhat, and he is now down to 277 (it's October now). 73 pounds so far. His target weight is 200. He exercises just moderately.

Cutting out those foods just "melted" him, and people who've never seen him anything other than obese already barely recognize him. He's gotten his facial features back! His cholesterol and BP dropped dramatically just by changing his eating habits alone (notice I didn't say "diet", I said changing eating habits).

He eats lean meats (and a few eggs a week), and a lot of fresh, steamed, and stir-fried veggies. Instead of using bread for a sandwich, he rolls cold cuts etc. into a large romaine lettuce leaf or a low-carb whole grain tortilla. He limits grains and fruits at this point. He will be able to eat more of those after the insulin resistence is gone (that's what makes you hold on to your weight, and eliminating carbs and sugars will work wonders). He layed off the salt, which let go of the water retention which in turn makes fat loss easier. Instead I spice up his meals with herbs and other various spices (like Mrs. Dash Table Blend). He really likes beans, so I use a lot of beans and just a little meat in his chili.

Don't do the Atkins thing. He did that a few years ago, lost weight like crazy, but ended up with high blood pressure, pitting edema, and high cholesterol. Also at this point, no potatoes and easy on the carrots. Strangely, sweet potatoes even with their high natural sugar content really helps insulin resistence (look it up!) and he learned to really like those steamed with just a little herb butter.

Forget the diet fads. Eat healthfully, and only until you're satisfied, not stuffed. Oh, he eats an ounce of extra dark chocolate every day for his heart. If you feel you need sweets more often, sucking a hard candy will go along way. Just remember to brush your teeth more often, or you'll exchange fat for cavities!

P.S. For the first 2 months, he ate NO carbs or sugar. It really jump started his weight loss.

How long ago did your duaghter started gaining weiight? Do you have a good mother daughter relationship? Is the weight issue , the right issue? It is possible that her weight gain problem cuold have been caused by some kind of change in your life style or some kind of family problem. Look at this posibilities. Has she always been somewhat overweight? Has she really gain that much weight just latelly or has she been gaining the weight progressivly and now is just too much? You need to take a good look at the situation and make an assesmment of what you think history of the situation is. If you have a good relationship, the age issue won't really make any difference. The only issue will be with the men that will look at her as an adult and will see her as a candidate for dating or relationships. Does that thought scares you? Are you fat or thin? May be all of your family members are big by genetics. Are you asking something resonable of her or are you idializing what you would like for her too look like? Why do you want her to look thnner now? Are you feeling guilty because now she will be an aduilt and you feel that you wonn't have any influnce in her life to make her change her attitudes toward weght losss or personnal apperance? This is raelly a too complex issue to try to deal with it right here. you need to become her real true friend, that way you will be able to tell her anything you need to tell her without any fear of hurting her or reprisal, what ever they might be. Work on your communication, you have been telling her something thru your eating habits all her life and may be they haven't been all that healthy. Now she is trying to communicate back to you. What she might be trying to tell you? Do not pamper her, she is trying to find an easy fix to the problem, let her work this one out with your help. There is nothing impossible , in human terms , if only want it. Try outside help, such as doctors , counselers, family therapists, etc. Do not joke about this problem. this could, if not checked turn into a grave health problem with time. Get the support of the enntire family. Involve the family in activities together. Limit the use of the computer while you can. Admit your responsibility in the creation of this problem. Set an exeple in as much as weght loss and heatlfull habits. Try fasting and skipping the last meal of the day, and having a healthy breakfast.. Seek medical answers. Take cooking lessons together to learn cooking habits for people with diabetes. I won't keep going or I won;t finish . Wish you good eating!!!

Because you have to cut back on carbs, doesn't mean you have to give them up. For example, if you ate a carb for breakfast..say a bagel, or oatmeal, then don't have carbs with lunch. Instead of a sandwhich, go for a salad, or wrap whatever you normally make a sandwhich with in lettuce. Cut back on the amount of carbs you eat at dinner..instead of eating a huge baked potato, eat half a potato. Also avoid eating sugar from cookies, cakes, colas, candy, etc.

Look at your labels when buying food and opt for the lowfat versions, such as light salad dressings, lowfat sourcream, and eat lean cuts of meats, pull off your chicken skin and don't eat anything fried. There are still plenty of things out there to eat. Fresh fruit and veggies are good for you no matter what diet you're on.

Fruits and vegetables are certainly the best things to eat!Stay away from fast foods! Also do as much in the way of exercising as you are able. Take long walks, they are very enjoyable and you get to see interesting things along the way.
