Yes, and I think it's a particularly bad deal for the prospective customers.
Toyota is noted for this as they hop on their computers and find a car that fits the customer needs within their region. If prospective buyers don't want to order factory direct and wait 4-8 weeks It's a good deal for the dealers to move stock off their lots. Most dealers hire drivers to swap new and used cars with other dealers.
I'm a fussy old buzzard as I'd certainly order exactly what I wanted and it would land at the dealer with 1-3 miles on the odometer.

You can trade in a bicycle at a dealership, if they think it will help make a deal (someone actually did this at my old dealership!) You WILL get more money selling it yourself. Dealers buy at low bluebook values and sell at high. Why cheat yourself out of the difference? Since it is a '95 Corolla, you won't get much from a dealer I am afraid, even if it is in great shape. It is older, and a common car. Just put an ad in the paper, or on craigslist, you will see what people will pay pretty quick.

Dealers don't generally deal directly with each other but it's entirely possible that the Chevy dealer took your car to the auction and the Toyota dealer bought it at the auction.

I don't know about trading used cars. I know the dealer I work for trades with other dealers for new cars so the customer can get what they want.
