Stick to the main streets where there is a lot of people. One block the wrong way in some directions will be undesirable to say the least. It's definitely a blend of new and old.
Remember you are surrounded by skid row and all that comes with that. I personally don't want to eat on a sidewalk cafe with smelly homeless people walking by me.You also have to get back to your car. Be careful where you park if you have to walk too far.
The parts that are safe seem to attract a lot of people and they all have fun and there's a lot of places to try but just remember your surroundings and be safe.
If you want to go to sea port village or the harbor or the zoo or balboa park you will leave the safety of the gas lamp district and although some of these places are walking distance, drive or take a cab or take a bike carriage ride.

I live here, in downtown. I walk everywhere at all hours...usually with someone. I don't recommend running around late at night by yourself. I agree not to go a further east than park...really there isn't anything that direction anyway. Gaslamp is totally safe, and the streets between the Ballpark, Gaslamp, Seaport Village, the Harbor and Little Italy are all safe. The bike carriages are fine to take. They are a bit overpriced, and everything is walkable...I have taken them a few times, and nobody has ever demanded more money.
There is no "skid row" down here.....the only one is up in LA. And while there are homeless people around, the worst that will happen is you will get asked by every one of them for spare change.
Also nobody mentioned the trolley. The trolley is clean, safe, and a very fun way to get around. Its also reasonably priced. You really only need it if you are going a solid distance. You may want to consider taking the trolley between Gaslamp and Little Italy, or to take up to Old Town.

Its very safe. I am a San Diego native and as far as downtown areas go it's extremely safe. I am in my early 20's and have never felt uncomfortable walking around downtown by myself. There are lots of people around so the chance of anything happening to slim anyhow. As a tourist though I would stay in the gaslamp district and not go further east then Park. If you want to leave downtown you can take the trolley to Mission Valley or Old Town.

Hi,
I live downtown, so here's the scoop.
During the daytime, you can walk anywhere you want as far west as the bay (that's as far as you can go). If you're going east, stop around Park Blvd. (although there is a great breakfast place called The Mission on the corner of J and 13th). There's nothing to see past that point anyway.
Rent a bike or drive as far north as you want. You can spend a few hours pedaling through the greenery of Balboa park, stop off for a margarita in Hillcrest, and pedal back. Of course, 4th, 5th, and 6th avenue downtown is totally cool. Lots of restaurants and clubs. One of my favorite clubs is Aubergine (http://www.aubergineon4th.com). They have good sushi, reasonable drink prices.
One person suggested the bike carriages. DONT DO IT. They quote you one price, and then try to charge you more. Plus, it's always great weather, so why not stroll through the town.
