I'm a manager in a large office. I manage a team of 15 people, one of which is a 24 yr old notorious ladies man. He accidentally sent a member of my staff an email saying "ok bye baby!!" It seems that he was sending this as part of an email conversation but replied to the wrong person. This means he is most probably secretly dating someone in the office. Inter department dating is not allowed as we've have problems in the past. I need to find out who that email was to be sent to, but don't feel I should ask him, as he can be a fantastic liar and very defensive. A supervisor in our team thinks it is someone in our team rather than outside the team but she doesn't know why she thinks this. What do you think?
How do I solve this?

Whatever you do, don't let on that you know about the email to anyone. Look at who he talks to the most, in person, for starters. If your team leaves work at the same time, chance are he will let his guard down and talk/walk/love this person outside the office. Keep a close eye on this person. But until then, don't stalk or talk behind this person's back, it could prove fatal on your part if you accuse.

You still have to ask him whether he lies or not because his response will need to be a part of his personnel file in case further action is required at some later date. Beyond that, you don't want to devote too much time to investigating this matter (unless that's the business you're in) because these efforts detract from the actual mission of your firm. Just like this little "misstep" of his came to light, other evidence of his breach of company policy will present itself in time, so you can most likely wait patiently for such an eventuality (someone will file a complaint, some sort of disturbance will arise as a result of the relationship(s), or another errant email will occur). Being in a relationship, while against company policy, is hardy illegal, so any undue efforts to ascertain information may open the company up to civil liabilities; something to also think about.

You are the boss so ask him? Remind him that people in the office are not allowed to date. Then tell him he might lose his job.
