File' (pronounced fee-lay) is what you are referring to.

A little goes a long way to make your gumbo thick.

File' is made from dried Sassafras tree leaves. You harvest them in the early spring or the early fall (where I live) and dry, crush and sift them in to powder. It is best if File' is stored in a dark colored glass jar in the fridge. It last forever in stored properly. I make my own. It's not hard to do.

Good luck on your gumbo.
