Niagara Falls is more than 400 miles (each way) from New York City. Unless you fly to the Falls, I don't see how you can make it in only one day. I think you either should fly there and back, allow more time to spend there, or make it your last stop and go home from there. It's gorgeous. It's even prettier from the Canadian side, so bring your passport if you're going to do that. It's been years since we've been there. What I remember is those gorgous squirrels - black squirrels with the shiniest coats.

Just want to make sure you are not going to New York City, but to upstate New York, and want a day trip to the falls....because it is an 8 hour drive from the city to the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area, and you posted your question on the New York City site.

Several people I know are surprisded that just because they are in the same state, it is that far between the northwesternmost part of the state and the southeasternmost which is what going from NYC to Niagara is.

I live between Cleveland and Akron, OH and it actually took me less time to drive sometimes from New York (where I grew up) to Akron than it did for me to drive from LI to pick my son up in that northern tier.

It would probably cost you less money and not take too long if you booked a round trip JFK to Buffalo flight ($59 and tax or so using Jet Blue, I think) and then there are quite a few tour buses in Buffalo going to the Falls.

Otherwise, if you are not going to be going from NYC, but from someplace closer, you would probably be best Googling "bus tours from ______, NY to Niagara Falls).

When you get to the falls, there is no way better to see them than from the Maid of the Mist, the boat discussed in a previous post-http://www.maidofthemist.com/en/

There is a boat tour that goes under the falls, but the name escapes me. They make many trips during the day, so you should be able to get on without reservations. Maybe you should Google it, to be sure.

I hope Niagra Falls was your primary destination. New York is a big state, and the falls are at the Canadian border. If you were going to NYC, it would be a very long day trip.

The only way to do a day trip to Niagara from NYC is to fly, which is very expensive. The link below is the only tour I've found. You can buy the flights separately take a taxi to the falls, but I doubt it'd be much cheaper.

we went for an overnight visit in July and didn't bother with tour companies...especially since we were limited on time. If you want to see the Falls up close and personal, I'd suggest doing the Maid of the Mist boat ride (I believe this goes from both the U.S. and the Canadian side), Cave of the Winds tour (U.S. side), Behind the Falls (Canadian side). There's also the park on the U.S. side you could check out. Or, if you resere in advance, there's a jet boat tour (not sure from which side or from both). As I said, we didn't use a tour company, we used the internet to decide which activities we wanted to do.

Actually, look for a cheap airfare from NYC-Buffalo. You can get one out of JFK since there are budget airlines that operate on that route -- I'd recommend JetBlue. It is too far to go for one day ... unless you fly up and back. Buffalo is basically right at Niagara Falls.

Do the tour on your on. There are numerous vendors there selling packets which have tickets to various "things to see and do". Buy one that you can do in one day. Make sure you go on the Maid of the Mist. Drive down and see the Whirlpool. Go through the museum. Stay on the Canadian side. Most of the big events are there.
