There are 2 main ones I can think of.

Stabilizing Iraq with US forces gives the US military and their Allies a staging point in the middle east for other conflicts (ie Iran). I believe (and I could be wrong) that the closest major staging point at this time is the coast of Africa. Which is a little far.

Right now, the conflict in Iraq is attracting terrorists like a magnet. Everyone wants to take a crack at the US. So even though everyone seems to be coming out of the woodwork, sometimes you have to flush out the cockroaches before you can step on them.

You asked for reasons in favor. There are plenty of reasons against as well, which I'm sure you'll get several "There are none!" replies, but it doesn't really answer the question, eh?

There were several actually:

1) Iraq repeatedly violated both UN Resolutions and the ceasefire agreement from the first gulf war.
2) Iraq engaged in obfuscation regarding the extent of their WMD program. It is true that we did not find major stockpiles of banned weapons after the invasion. However, because of Iraq's constant stonewalling in this area we could not be sure what they really possessed.
3) Saddam Hussein was a mass murderer who had engaged in genocide against his own people (The Kurds).
4) Saddam Hussein did support international terrorism. For anyone who doubts this go back and review 25,000 dollar. payouts to families of suicide bombers. Now if you want to say that Hussein did not have anything to do with 911, I will agree with that, but contrary to the misrepresentation of statements by some, 911 was never directly cited by the President as justification for invading Iraq.

I cannot give you any adequate reasons why we continue to occupy the country with such large scale troop strength. The country should have been turned over to the Iraqis completely by now. I also do not believe that to do so would cause the country to degenerate into a terrorist state as some do.

In 1996 Osama bin Laden in a televised event declared war on the USA, in what is called a "Fatwa" (declaration).

Since then he and his organization and it's allies have made good on that declaration attacking Americans, it's allies and assets worldwide.

He made it not only a war of economics (knowing that the USA would prosecute this war and spend Billions and Billions of dollars doing so) as well as disrupting the balance of the world's economies, but his wanted to "wake up" the fundamentalist Muslim world to the ideological war that was being waged against them by the great Satan...the USA.

His attacks were against the Western way of Life, Thought, and Practice.

Think about it. What are the basic tenets of Western Life. Freedom: religious, personal, gender, intellectual Tolerance, Respect,

Do you want your freedom? Are you free from persecution?
Are you a woman and do you have a job? owe a business? have a degree?

Do you like your sexual freedom?

How about your quality of life? Do you want a religous leader dictating who, what, where, how much of you life?

Are you a citizen of world? do you care if the Middle East is stable?

Do you understand how stability in the Middle East effects you? The world?

Are you a fan of democracy?

This ultimately is a war of ideology, with how the world is going to run in the stakes. One side wants the world to go back to a medieval social pattern and the other espouses freedom of the individual.

What side of the war are you on?

The biggest reason in favor of the war is stopping the terrorists from controlling the Middle East. They have but one goal and that is the destruction of all Christian nations who do not accept Islam. What other choice do we have??

1) We're keeping the oil revenue out of the hands of muslim extremists, who would use it to attack us.

2) We're engaging Al Qaeda, and we're winning.

3) It is good for us to have all those troops there, ready to go into action against other countries in the region that support terrorism.

4) We're keeping the islamofacists on the run so they don't have time to plan new attacks on us.

5) We're showing other potential problem countries that when we tell them to shape up or we'll make them shape up, they believe us, and they shape up. Omar Qaddafi of Lybia voluntarily gave up his WMDs, and it looks like North Korea will halt their nuclear program.

6) We're preventing women there from being stoned to death for leaving the house without wearing a burka.

7) We're enabling women to go to school.

8) We're preventing homosexuals from being hung, like they are in Iran.

9) We're showing muslims all over the world that Allah isn't making us lose, which is what the islamofacists have been telling them.

10) We're spreading democracy, freedom, and economic opportunity.

In summary, it's keeping us safe, notice we haven't been attacked?

touchy issue. The war is supposed to be about self deffence yet another angle states that it is about oil. Sad that the truth can't reveal itself.

Although I disagree with us being over there. I have to remind myself how many "terrorists" or future "terrorists" we are killing. "Terrorists" who are being kept busy instead of living in the US planning there next attack on us. And yes our military sadly are losing there life, but I'm sure if you asked them before they died "would you die in order to stop a terrorist from coming to America and killing your fellow American?" What do you think they would answer. I'm sure most of them would be proud to prevent any "terrorist" from doing any harm to us. I still pray everyday for our men/women. Also for there families back home.

there was never a choice.
saddam violated the terms of his surrender.
now that he has been removed, one could argue that we should pull out before the country is stabilized, but remember how the democrats practially had ghw bush thown out for doing that.
