my ex dumped me 7 months ago and we haven't really talked since (a few times on msn, that's it). i kinda want to befriend him now. is it appropriate for me to call him up and arrange a meeting (coffee or something?)

Sure, but be aware that just because you want to be friends does not mean he does. My advice would be to keep it light at first...ask him to coffee or lunch first, and if he accepts and things go well, do it again. You'll need to rebuild the trust you need for a friendship slowly.

I think it depends on how things ended but I don't think it could hurt to try to befriend him. If he chooses not to then you at least tried to mend the hurt feelings if there are any. Its kind of a way of burying the hatchet so to speak. You might not actually become best of friends but you may at least be aquantences. This way if you run into each other you wont be as uncomfortable. However if things ended to badly then you might want to give it more time.

Because he might think that you are wanting to get back with him!
But if you think he is willing to be friends with you then give it a chance!

I don't think that's a good idea. (Regardless of whether you intend to keep things platonic or have ulterior motives of getting back together.) It's better that you and he move on.
