it very well could be, but if you don't drink and you watch yourself, you're not going to be finding yourself craving it and addicted to it without ever having it.
if it does run in your family like you say it does, it will probably be easier for you to become and alcoholic if/when you do start drinking.
My ex's dad was, and he went through AA, my ex, was one before he was 21 and rent into rehab 4 months after he turned 21 and is still struggling.

I don't think that is a very good excuse to be an alcoholic. Instead of a drinking gene I think there is an assortment of human characteristic that contribute to a person being a coward and not being able to face the world without a drink in his belly. Some men are just not man enough to be a real man.

It sure seems to run in families that way. My mother was an alcoholic and most of the 8 kids were prone to over-drinking! Maybe me being the youngest and seeing all this stopped me from early on to ever develop into an alcoholic. I'm glad to see you recognize this and can now avoid turning to alcohol. It causes nothing but heartache and illness!

My step father, My grandfather And others in my Family are alcoholics. Sometimes I do feel the urge to drink after a long day. The point is you are more likely to carry this trait with you but it may not be alcohol. I am addicted to smoking. It is more likely that you have an addictive personality, but it may not be alcohol but be careful. If you go drinking once in awhile you should be ok but if you go drinking and then one day feel like you need a drink try to fight the urge and it may be time to re evaluate.

Yeah i do. It runs in my family and i like to party. But i've seen myself at time depend on it and i'm almost 21. I think that u have a chance but it's depends if u like to drink. If u do i think u need to be really careful and think about if u want to be an alcoholic too or do u want to fight for ur life and make something good out of it.

Sweetie, like yourself there were members of my clan that had problems with the bottle. My granddad, father and now myself. But I do not personally believe that alcoholism is genetic as I have three sons (all of legal drinking age) and none of them have developed any problems due to booze. My two younger sons do smoke a lot of pot but personally I'd much rather them do that then drink. My other son can have a six pack of beer last him for months. Do not allow yourself to fret over the possibility of becoming an alcoholic. However; knowing the history of your family tree relating to drinking be careful when you do drink and do not allow yourself to over indulge. Others may disagree with my opinion but that is why we are human so we can all have our own opinions. Best of luck and please be careful when drinking but do not allow these fears to take over your life.

your chances are very high.
since you are thinking about this im guessing you are not drinking yet or have started and now are thinking it might be a bad choice.
alcohol ruins not only the life of the alcoholic but those that love them and care about them.
the smartest choice would be to never begin drinking alcohol and rejoice in the things in life that give you honest fulfillment.

I think it's likely, but here's the thing. You -know- that's a problem for your family members. And knowing that, you can avoid alcohol when you get older. If you avoid it, you won't have to worry about alcoholism. That's why knowledge is power.

Odds are you've got a genetic predisposition, yes.
But, in order to become an alcoholic, you've got to drink. If you don't load the gun, you can't get shot! If I were you I wouldn't take the chance.

it would be very wise if you avoid alcohol, YES.
i'm a recovering alcoholic, and many in my family suffer or did suffer from alcoholism.
it's not fun and from my own experience, i can say you can have a lot more fun without alcohol than you can with the stuff.
hugs
