I'd like to add a second kitchen to the lower level of a house to be used as a guest suite and for entertainment purposes. Is there anything I should do to ensure I'm not decreasing the value of the house?

Keep the space as open as you can...other than that, go for it

If it's for personal enjoyment as you plan on living in your home for the foreseeable future, then do whatever you like. If you want to increase the home's value in anticipation of a sale then the money would be better spent in making sure the main kitchen and bathrooms are in top condition. Also consider the flooring, windows, landscaping and exterior siding condition.

While I agree that kitchens and baths have the highest ROI (return on investment) I don't believe this applies to a second kitchen. Since it is to be an entertaining area, I would use a small stove and frig and sink. Pools have become more detrimental than good.

Yes it will. Studies have shown that the two main areas that increase a homes value are the kitchen and the bathroom. Oddly enough, a swimming pool doesn't do as much.

Keep it simple. Maybe a kitchenette / Bar area. But don't use too much floor space. If you're able to do that, you will increase value.
