Genesis 2:7 states man is a soul so logically a cat or dog would also be a soul.

Well obviously that depends on how you define "soul". If "soul" simply means "a life principle" and death is defined as separation of soul from body, then animals have a soul. What they do not have however is an immortal soul. That is what separates humans from animals.

The poster just above must be smoking something illegal. No Catholic Mass has ever been offered for a deceased animal, and no sacrament, including baptism, has ever been given to an animal. That would be considered a sacrilege - the desecration of something sacred. Also, mass baptisms are not allowed even for humans, nor is post-mortem baptism allowed.

Yes and no. I think that all living things, as part of the ecosystem of an integrated planet, participate in a great soul, whom we might choose to call Gaia.

In that sense, dogs and cats and you and I all have (though the word "have" isnt right -- we all participate in) a soul. Singular not plural.

Humans have separate consciousnesses, which you might better call our minds, and which are more-or-less continuous with the one Soul. I don't think the same can be said of our animal friends.

We are a soul, as are animals. We do not have a soul that is separate from our body that lives on.

Gen. 2:7 "Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of the dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul." (If he became a living soul, then before that he was a dead soul, he was not given a soul)

The same is said of animals at Gen. 1: 20, 21, 24, 25 "God went on to say: 'Let the water swarm forth a swarm of living souls..'And God proceded to create the great sea monsters and every living soul that moves about..."

Lev. 24: 17 & 18 "In case a man strikes any soul of mankind fatally, he should be put to death without fail. And the fatal striker of the soul of a domestic animal should make compenstion for it, soul for soul."

The soul can die:

Ezek 18:4 "...the soul that is sinning - it itself will die."

Acts 3:23 "Indeed, any soul that does not listen to that Prophet wil be completely destroyed from among the people."

Ecc. 3:19 "For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies, and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everythign is vanity."

Humans however, are made in God's image and have the promises of everlasting life that has not been promised to the animals. John 17:3 "This means everlasting life, there taking in knowledge of you the only true God, and the one whom you sent forth Jesus Christ."

So enjoy your pets, keep them healthy, so they can live as long a life as possible. The bible shows God does care for the animals and does not want them to be mistreated. Man is responsible for the care of animals.

I believe they do. But, of course, for others, that's an interpretation as to what a person thinks a soul is! :-)

I don't believe anything has a "soul", but when I was little and catholic, my church would do mass baptisms for pets so they could go to heaven, which is rather amusing.
