I believe it is inborn. In the book "The Psychology of Religion", it explains how evolutionary processes create within us the desire to imbue events with purposeful, causal agents.
It's funny how the negative atheists (sadly, a majority around here) are all so sure of brainwashing, when really it's the science that matters. The number of converts to and from a certain type of thinking after an entire childhood of "brainwashing" shows that there's plenty of opportunity for escape, at least as an adult. And as long as it's not Scientology.

There have been studies done that show man's brain might just be "hardwired for God". I think TIME Magazine had an article on that a while ago. I'm sure you'll find some material if you google it.
PS: A scriptural point - Jesus said that "Happy are those CONSCIOUS of their spiritual need", the implication being that everyone has that spiritual need and only those aware of it are truly happy.

If you look at history, you will find that there has never been a society or a culture that did not include some kind of a belief in "god". People totally separated from the rest of humanity for hundreds of generations still come to a conclusion that "god" exist. They also usually believe he is a creator, has a moral code that they need to follow, and desires their prayers and worship.
That has to be more then co-incidence for them all to believe.

Mankind was created in the image of God. God is righteous, perfect. Adam and Eve were righteous until they sinned.
When they sinned, they left their habitation of their first state which was a living soul, and were changed. They sold their souls to the devil by believing his lie and brought death upon their heads and the heads of all mankind.
They went from being a spiritual being that could have lived for ever to one who would suffer death and be held captive by the devil.

Yes please. It may not be in the genes; Genes are a matter.. a physical matter. It is deep within you, in your spirit or soul, which is a metaphysical state.. not a matter. That inner something urges you to talk about it. But, because, as a human, you have been given the option/will you may either accept or you may deny that what is within you. The listeners may believe in you, may not believe in you. Like your dreams. Believable / Unbelievable to the listeners.

I think that the desire to transcend ourselves is innate. It permeates our being. We aspire to ever greater heights of knowledge, ceaselessly endeavor to break through barriers and reach what? Nothing less than that transcendent source of it all. We can see this striving in every field of knowledge.

Sorry, but I don’t think I would have a need to believe if there really was nothing to the spiritual experience.
No person brought me back to God.
No event brought me back to God.
God brought me back to God.

Yes. Everyone worships something. Everyone places something first in their life. It make them happy to do so. Christians have simply placed God first in their life. They've placed the appropriate being first. It makes us happy to do so.
