This is what I was told. When you sneeze your heart stops so back in the day people would say GOD Bless You.

I heard a long time ago that they said that because when you sneezed they believed it was demon's escaping your body, therefore they would say bless you. People were way to superstitious back in the day. Its kinda one of those "Mama said" things, but that's what I was told.

Centuries ago people used to believe that your soul could be thrown from your body when you sneezeed, that sneezing opened your body to invasion by evil spirits, or that it was your body's effort to force out an invading evil spirit. Thus, "bless you" was used as a sort of shield against evil.

Because in old times they believed that whenever you sneezed, it meant that your soul was trying to get out of your body and by saying "Bless You" it kept it from leaving.

It was a belief that all you bodily functions, including your hearbeat, stopped for a moment when you sneeze. You were "blessed" because everything started working again afterwards.

People used to think that when you sneezed evil spirits were being expelled from your body (brilliant isn't it?). As an atheist, I only say excuse you.
