When the Pope or priest blesses an object such as a ring or a photo what does it actually do?

It remains as it was. The person to which it belongs, however, may experience a psychological change in state or attitude toward the object, depending upon the extent to which he/she places any reverence on the person doing the blessing.

The object becomes a sacramental.

Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. (Luke 9:16)

Sacramentals are sacred signs that help us live holy lives. Although they do not produce sanctifying grace

Sacramentals include blessings of persons, meals, objects (including water), and places.

The priest blesses the congregation during Mass.

Christians bless their meals. "Bless us O Lord and these thy gifts, ..."

Priests bless water, animals, ships, homes, and even automobiles. "God bless this home and all those who enter here."

It makes the owner of the ring believe that some sort of magic way preformed on the ring . After the blessing , the object is exactly what it was before , no better - - no worse . It's all in the superstitious mind .

It does nothing. A blessing is just that...words.

It make the object holy. It should be treated with respect just as we show respect for God and His creation. The object is used to remind us of God and His goodness.
